Apple Pay Officially Launches in India
Apple Pay has made its debut in India, ushering in Apple’s contactless payment service to one of the largest digital payments markets globally.
Initially, the service is accessible to customers holding eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards.
This allows users to execute payments via an iPhone, Apple Watch, or iPad without the need to input a card PIN or one-time password (OTP) during checkout.
Apple Pay Makes Its Grand Entrance in India
Launched on September 30, Apple Pay arrives in India more than ten years after its inception in the United States.
At the outset, Axis Bank serves as Apple’s primary banking partner within the Indian market. Customers with qualifying Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards can seamlessly integrate their cards into the Apple Wallet, thus gaining access to Apple Pay.
Support for Mac devices is on the horizon and is expected to roll out in the near future.
Seamless Payments Without PIN or OTP
Apple Pay is engineered to expedite contactless card transactions.
At brick-and-mortar establishments, users can verify transactions using Face ID, Touch ID, or their device passcode before positioning their iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible contactless payment terminal.
Additionally, Apple Pay can be utilized for purchases in supported applications as well as on various websites, significantly reducing the hassle of repeatedly inputting credit card details during online transactions.
Current Limitations: RuPay Cards Not Supported
The initial rollout comes with a notable restriction.
Currently, Apple Pay exclusively supports Axis Bank credit cards tied to the Visa and Mastercard networks, with RuPay credit cards not included at this stage.
Apple is anticipated to broaden its support to encompass more banks in the future, following prior discussions with other significant Indian financial institutions, although no extensive partnerships have been formally announced as yet.
Enhanced Security Protocols
Central to Apple’s payment system is its emphasis on security and user privacy.
When a card is added to Apple Pay, the actual card number is neither stored on Apple’s servers nor shared with vendors.
Instead, Apple Pay generates a unique Device Account Number that is encrypted and resides in the device’s Secure Element.
Transactions are authenticated through the security features inherent to Apple devices, effectively acting as an additional safeguard for users’ sensitive information.
Support from Numerous Indian Merchants
Apple Pay launches with a robust support network, encompassing a burgeoning array of Indian merchants.
The service can be employed at participating shops, within applications, and on websites, facilitated by payment infrastructure providers like PayU, Razorpay, Pine Labs, Paytm, Cashfree, JusPay, Mswipe, and Worldline, all of which enable merchant acceptance.
Prominent consumer brands and services are among the entities poised to accept Apple Pay from the outset.
Navigating a UPI-centric Environment
While Apple Pay’s arrival is noteworthy, it enters an ecosystem predominantly governed by the UPI (Unified Payments Interface).
Apple Pay does not replace UPI; rather, the initial service emphasizes card-based transactions. Its immediate appeal is likely to resonate with iPhone users who already favor credit cards for purchases and seek a more convenient contactless payment alternative.
This launch marks a significant expansion of Apple’s financial services footprint into one of the fastest-growing digital payment landscapes worldwide.
In Summary

Apple Pay has officially launched in India, partnering with Axis Bank as its initial banking ally. Eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cardholders can now utilize iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad for contactless transactions across physical stores, applications, and the web.
Initially, RuPay cards are not supported. Through tokenization and device authentication, Apple Pay ensures that genuine card details remain concealed from merchants and Apple’s servers.
