Apple Poised to Enter Foldable Smartphone Market with iPhone Fold
Apple is reportedly gearing up to debut its inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Fold, later this year, an intriguing device that may seamlessly merge the functionalities of the iPhone and iPad.
According to insights from Bloomberg, the tech giant is meticulously crafting new iOS features designed to optimize multitasking capabilities on the expansive inner display, allowing users to fully exploit the potential of the unfolded screen.
When folded, the iPhone Fold is anticipated to operate like a standard iPhone. The outer display, estimated to measure approximately 5.5 inches, promises to retain the recognizable iOS interface, complete with a home screen app dock.
However, the true innovation resides within the unfolded inner display, rumored to span 7.8 inches, potentially enabling users to operate two applications simultaneously—a multitasking advantage historically confined to iPads.
Beyond just split-screen functionality, Apple is reportedly developing a sidebar functionality to facilitate smoother transitions between applications.
Additionally, software developers might receive resources to modify existing applications to align with the new interface, ensuring a fluid transition for users.
These enhancements are likely to make their debut with the forthcoming iOS 27 update, although preview announcements are unlikely during the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), slated for June.
Turning to hardware, the iPhone Fold is speculated to feature an aspect ratio of 4:3, rendering it broader than competing foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
While the interior display offers expansive workspace, the compact outer screen retains user convenience for portability. Both displays are expected to be equipped with AMOLED technology.
Interestingly, speculation suggests that Apple may opt to exclude Face ID from this foldable offering. Instead, the iPhone Fold is likely to incorporate Touch ID integrated into the power button, complemented by camera cutouts on both screens.
The device is also forecasted to feature a dual-camera configuration on the rear and operate on the yet-to-be-released A20 Pro chipset, which is also set to power upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models.
On the pricing front, the iPhone Fold is projected to be Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date. Preliminary reports indicate a price tag of approximately $2,400 (around Rs 2,15,000), contrasting with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which begins at a price of Rs 1,74,999 in India.
Despite the steep cost, the innovative foldable design, iPad-esque multitasking features, and state-of-the-art hardware may entice both tech aficionados and productivity-driven users alike.
If the current speculations prove accurate, Apple’s foray into the foldable realm could significantly reshape its strategy regarding multitasking and portable devices.
