Continuing its efforts, Apple is concentrating on new iOS app designs and a revamp of its core iPhone applications to incorporate sidebars, akin to many existing iPad applications.
This enhancement will empower developers to tailor their iPhone software for a user interface reminiscent of an iPad in landscape mode.
Despite offering functionalities characteristic of an iPad, it is noteworthy that the foldable iPhone will operate on the standard iOS, as opposed to the more complex iPadOS.
This decision implies a retention of its relatively simpler multitasking capabilities rather than embracing the intricate desktop-style interface introduced in iPadOS 26. Additionally, existing iPad apps will not be natively operable on the device.
While the foldable iPhone will not support multiple windows concurrently like an iPad mini, it does allow simultaneous viewing of two applications side by side—an attractive feature that aligns with offerings from Samsung, Google, and other competitors.
Throughout its development process, Apple identified two significant limitations of current foldable devices: narrow internal displays and noticeable creases—lines observable when the device is unfolded. In another unprecedented move, the external display will feature a diminutive hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera, a shift from the traditional pill-shaped notch seen on contemporary iPhones. Reports indicate a similar design is expected to debut on a touchscreen version of the MacBook Pro later this year.
This innovative design was made possible by the removal of the Face ID facial-recognition system, which will be replaced by Touch ID integrated into the side button.
This marks the first introduction of a fingerprint sensor in an iPhone since the third-generation model in 2022.
