Apple has unveiled the Apple Upgrade, a novel leasing initiative that permits customers to utilize the latest iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch models by remitting a fixed monthly fee rather than acquiring the devices outright.
Supported by Klarna, this program also allows users to transition to a newer device at the conclusion of the lease by returning their current one.
The service is currently accessible exclusively in the United States and supersedes Apple’s longstanding iPhone Upgrade Program.
Operational Mechanics of Apple Upgrade
Participants can select an eligible Apple device, opt for Apple Upgrade during the checkout process, and complete a lease application via Klarna.
Lease parameters encompass:
- 12 or 24 months for iPhone and Apple Watch
- 24 or 36 months for iPad and Mac
Upon reaching the end of the lease, users possess several options:
- Upgrade to a newer Apple device by returning the existing one
- Return the device and exit the program
- Purchase the device by remitting the remaining value
Apple also enables users to trade in an existing device upon initial enrollment, thereby mitigating their monthly payments.
Monthly Payments Commencing at $17.99
Apple asserts that the program facilitates budget-friendly monthly payments across its product range.
Initial pricing comprises:
- iPhone 17e: Starting at $17.99/month
- iPhone 17: Starting at $22.99/month
- iPhone Air: Starting at $28.99/month
- iPhone 17 Pro: Starting at $31.99/month
Similar lease arrangements apply to Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches, with pricing contingent upon the chosen model and lease duration.
Exclusion of AppleCare
Diverging from the previous iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is not included within the Apple Upgrade.
Customers seeking protection against accidental damage or theft must procure AppleCare separately. Apple notes that acquiring AppleCare can also mitigate damage fees upon the return of a leased device.
Credit Assessment and Eligibility Criteria
Apple Upgrade is only available to eligible US residents aged 18 or older.
Prospective applicants must undergo a soft credit check through Klarna, which does not impact their credit score. They must also provide a valid US billing address, Social Security Number, and an acceptable debit or credit card.
A Transition Towards Subscription-Based Hardware
Through Apple Upgrade, the company is progressively migrating to a subscription-style ownership model for its hardware.
Rather than remitting the complete cost upfront, customers can perpetually access the latest Apple products through consistent monthly payments and regular upgrades.
Apple envisions that this new program will enhance accessibility to premium devices while fostering user retention within the Apple ecosystem.

Apple has introduced Apple Upgrade, an exclusive leasing program in the US that enables customers to lease iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches through Klarna, with monthly payments commencing at $17.99.
Users may choose to upgrade, return, or acquire their devices at the lease’s end, while AppleCare remains an optional addition rather than an included service.
