Apple has introduced its latest initiative, the Apple Upgrade program, enabling customers to opt for monthly payments on devices such as iPhones, Apple Watches, Macs, and iPads rather than making outright purchases.
This program, executed in collaboration with buy-now-pay-later entity Klarna, is now accessible via the Apple Store online, the Apple Store app, and physical retail locations.
Operational Mechanism of the Leasing Plans
The Apple Upgrade program presents leasing durations of 12 or 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches, whereas Mac and iPad devices are available under 24- and 36-month terms.
Monthly payments commence at $17.99 for an iPhone, $11.99 for an Apple Watch, $24.99 for a Mac, and $11.99 for an iPad.
Customers may further reduce these installments by trading in an existing device via the Apple Trade In program. Additionally, those utilizing an Apple Card can accrue 3 percent Daily Cash back on their monthly payments.
Karen Rasmussen, Apple’s Vice President of the Apple Store online, emphasized the intention to provide customers with a more adaptable payment structure for its products, both online and in person.
Currently, the program has launched exclusively in the United States, with no timeline for a rollout in India as of yet.
Procedure for Renting Apple Products
Applicants undergo a non-invasive credit inquiry, ensuring their credit score remains unaffected. According to Apple, Klarna’s approval process usually takes mere minutes.
Customers shopping in-store may leave with their device on the same day, while online shoppers can elect for shipping or in-store pickup. Each device includes Apple’s Personal Setup service to assist customers in configuration.
It is noteworthy that customers do not gain ownership of the device throughout the lease duration unless they opt for full payment.
At the conclusion of the lease term, users may choose to upgrade to a newer model, buy out the device with a one-time payment, or return it and discontinue participation in the program.
Early termination of the lease may incur significant fees, and customers may be liable for damages if a leased device is lost, stolen, or returned in subpar condition, as insurance is not incorporated within the plan.
Phase-Out of the iPhone Upgrade Program
The advent of the Apple Upgrade program has led to the discontinuation of its predecessor, the iPhone Upgrade Program, along with the iPhone Payments option.
Customers currently engaged in the iPhone Upgrade Program will be presented with alternatives including transitioning to Apple Upgrade, financing via Apple Card Monthly Installments, making outright payments, or exploring financing through their carrier.
It is important to note that several devices are excluded from the new leasing initiative, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, iPad (A16), and Studio Display.
Eligibility Criteria for Apple Upgrade
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, and maintain both an Apple Account and a Klarna Account in good standing, among other stipulations.
Specifically for iPhone leasing, customers are required to select an eligible carrier plan from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon and are ineligible if using a prepaid plan; however, the leased device is unlocked regardless of carrier selection.

If customers neglect to take action by the end of their lease term, the agreement automatically transitions to a month-to-month arrangement for up to six months, during which monthly payments may rise.
Should customers continue to remain inactive after this extension period, Apple will default to charging the device’s full purchase price.
