Apple Urges iPhone Users to Update iOS Amidst New Security Threat

In light of a recent discovery regarding a sophisticated hacking tool, Apple is advising iPhone users to promptly update their devices to the latest iOS version to safeguard sensitive information.

Earlier this month, the Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) unveiled its detection of Coruna, a suite of formidable hacking instruments that have unfortunately fallen into the hands of cybercriminals.

Following closely, Google has identified another malicious tool named DarkSword, which has the potential to covertly infiltrate iPhones and expropriate personal data.

If your device still operates on an older iOS version, the time for an update is now.

DarkSword: A Potential Danger for Millions

Cybersecurity firms Lookout and iVerify have also sounded alarms about DarkSword.

The particular menace posed by this tool lies in its ability to infect devices without any installation requirement.

Users might unknowingly visit a compromised website, allowing it to infiltrate their devices and pilfer personal and financial information—encompassing passwords, iCloud content, photographs, and more.

Its speed of operation is particularly alarming.

According to Lookout’s recent report, “In contrast to many previous sophisticated mobile device attacks, DarkSword is not intended for persistent surveillance.”

They further elaborated, “Once it completes its data collection and exfiltration process, it erases the files it generated on the device’s filesystem and exits. Its duration on the device is potentially just a matter of minutes, contingent on the quantity of data accessed and exfiltrated.”

Google reports that DarkSword is compatible with iPhones running iOS versions 18.4 to 18.7, potentially endangering millions of users.

Apple’s Response to the Emerging Threat

In reaction to this alarming threat landscape, Apple has issued a public statement.

“If your iPhone lacks the latest software, we strongly recommend updating your iOS to enhance data security,” Apple declared in an official communication.

“Recent discoveries by security researchers have highlighted web-based attacks targeting outdated iOS versions through malicious web content.”

“For instance, should you be utilizing an outdated version of iOS and inadvertently click a malicious link or navigate to a compromised site, your data could be at risk.”

Apple further asserted that users operating the latest updated versions of iOS, from 15 to 26, are “already adequately protected.

“We deployed a software update for iOS 15 and 16 on March 11, 2026, to augment defenses for older devices unable to update to the latest iOS iteration,” continued the statement.

Individuals with older models not capable of upgrading beyond iOS 13 or 14 can anticipate a ‘Critical Security Update’ within the forthcoming days.

Additionally, Apple suggested enabling Lockdown Mode to bolster protection against potential malicious threats.
