Surge in Popularity of AI Model Claude Following Pentagon Blacklisting
The artificial intelligence model, Claude, has witnessed a remarkable ascent in popularity subsequent to its recent blacklisting by the Pentagon due to ethical considerations.
On Saturday, Claude ascended to the apex of Apple’s free app chart in the United States, effectively dethroning OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This milestone occurred just a day after the Pentagon enlisted OpenAI to provide AI solutions for classified military networks.
The application also experienced a rise in the UK iPhone app charts but was unable to surpass ChatGPT. Claude similarly climbed the Android rankings in both the US and UK, yet ChatGPT maintained its dominance, as evidenced by data from Sensor Tower.
Amidst an unprecedented wave of demand, both Claude and other applications developed by Anthropic encountered outages early Monday.
The company reported that over 1,400 users experienced disruptions shortly after 6 AM ET, according to Downdetector, a service monitoring outages. By 11 AM ET, Anthropic announced that the issue had been resolved.
Despite its ongoing disputes with the Pentagon, business continued to flourish for Anthropic. The company released a statement indicating that every day of the previous week had resulted in record sign-ups for Claude.
In a notable development, Pete Hegseth, the US Defense Secretary, labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk last week, following CEO Dario Amodei’s steadfast refusal to relent on his stance regarding the use of their technology in mass surveillance and fully autonomous weaponry.
Amodei asserted that current AI applications lack the requisite reliability for weaponized use and that mass surveillance infringes upon constitutional rights.
He further contested the federal government’s classification of Anthropic as a supply chain risk and reassured clients and Pentagon contractors that their operations remain unaffected.
The federal government has accused Anthropic of overreaching its boundaries, with Donald Trump expressing his discontent via Truth Social, stating, “The Left-wing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the [Pentagon], and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution.” The Trump administration subsequently engaged OpenAI’s ChatGPT for the task.
On Friday, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced that his company secured a contract with the federal government merely hours after negotiations between the Pentagon and Anthropic collapsed.
He assured that ChatGPT would not be employed for autonomous weapon systems or mass surveillance.
However, many AI specialists, legal experts, and tech users expressed skepticism toward these assurances, questioning why the government opted out of a partnership with Anthropic only to establish an agreement with OpenAI, which embodies similar safeguards.
Some ChatGPT users, including prominent personalities like pop singer Katy Perry, made their switch to Anthropic public on social media, urging others to cancel their subscriptions as well.
An impressive start to the year for Anthropic has been noted, with active free users soaring by over 60% and daily sign-ups quadrupling, as reported by the company. Furthermore, Claude’s paid subscribers more than doubled.
Anthropic has facilitated an effortless transition for new users to switch to Claude through its memory feature, accessible with all paid plans. “With one copy-paste, Claude updates its memory and picks up right where you left off,” the company states on its website.

“Claude can import what matters, so your first conversation feels like your hundredth.” A detailed guide is available, providing prompts for users wishing to leave their current AI provider in favor of Claude.
