Access to Mythos and Fable was suspended following a directive from the U.S. government.
The U.S. government has granted Anthropic authorization to reinstate access to Mythos 5 for a designated group of U.S. organizations tasked with protecting vital infrastructure, as disclosed by the company on X.
While specific numbers of these organizations remain undisclosed, Semafor has reported that permission has been extended to over 100 entities, which encompass both large corporations and government bodies.
An announcement from Anthropic indicates that the redeployment of Mythos 5 is being expedited, with efforts ongoing to collaborate further with government entities to broaden access.
Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the potential reintroduction of Fable 5, although no specific timeline has been provided.
For context, on June 12, Anthropic ceased access to both Mythos 5 and Fable 5, the latter intended to democratize numerous functionalities inherent to Mythos.
At that time, the company articulated that the directive stemmed from government concerns regarding foreign nationals accessing its models, including those within the U.S. and affiliated with Anthropic itself.
This suspension followed warnings issued by Amazon and other firms, identifying the risk of these models being exploited by malicious actors.
Furthermore, reports surfaced indicating U.S. authorities were apprehensive about possible access to Mythos 5 by a group linked to China.
According to Semafor, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated his determination in a letter to Anthropic.
He remarked, “I have concluded that suitable safeguards are in place to allow select trusted partners to utilize the Claude Mythos 5 Model.” He emphasized that Anthropic has pledged to liaise with the U.S. government on the development of protocols and standards governing its models.
Lutnick’s correspondence also illustrated that Anthropic had made substantial inroads toward lifting the access block through daily consultations with government representatives over the preceding fortnight.
