Preliminary findings indicate that numerous white-collar professions are positioned precariously within this landscape.

Meanwhile, older professionals in white-collar roles are apprehensive about their job security in light of the advancing capabilities of generative AI and recent layoffs at major corporations such as Amazon and Block, which have directly cited AI as a factor.
In its investigation, Anthropic examined the discrepancy between AI’s potential capabilities and its practical application by workers across various sectors. The study concluded that there is “limited evidence that AI has affected employment to date.”
Fears that AI is a primary contributor to rising unemployment among recent college graduates may also be overstated; researchers noted only “suggestive evidence” that hiring for younger workers has diminished in roles vulnerable to AI exposure.
Nevertheless, despite the current findings indicating minimal impact on the job market, researchers warn that AI could ultimately precipitate profound transformations across numerous professions, spanning from legal practices to sales functions.
Occupations Most Vulnerable to AI
To ascertain a job’s vulnerability, Anthropic assessed AI’s proficiency in executing specific tasks against the prevalence of those tasks in various professions.
Jobs consist of a myriad of tasks, where some can be effortlessly substituted by AI, while others resist replacement.
For instance, although an AI chatbot could manage homework evaluations, it would struggle to effectively oversee a classroom environment, as noted by the researchers.
Anthropic defines a job’s “exposure” based on the proportion of its tasks that AI could potentially expedite or assist in performing.

Professions considered to be significantly “exposed” to artificial intelligence are predicted to experience slower growth through 2034, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Individuals in these fields are often characterized as “older, female, more educated, and higher-paid,” as noted by researchers from Anthropic.
This observation aligns with prior research indicating that occupations dominated by women, such as administrative assistants and clerical roles, face pronounced vulnerabilities to AI.
Conversely, occupations deemed least exposed to AI typically necessitate physical skills. Roles such as groundskeepers, cooks, motorcycle mechanics, lifeguards, and bartenders rank among those with the lowest exposure.
