Anthropic is currently engaged in negotiations with several private equity firms, notably Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman, to establish an artificial intelligence joint venture, as reported by The Information on Wednesday.
This development arises in the wake of a recent conflict between Anthropic and the United States Department of Defense, which has categorized the company as a supply chain risk.
The contentious issue had momentarily stalled discussions regarding the joint venture; however, these conversations have since resumed and are progressing positively, according to the report.
Objectives of the Partnership
The proposed venture could focus on marketing the technology developed by the creators of Claude to companies supported by the aforementioned investment firms, according to insights from individuals familiar with the negotiations.
If finalized, this collaboration would adopt a model analogous to that of Palantir. Under the leadership of CEO Dario Amodei, Anthropic would offer consulting services designed to facilitate the integration of its AI solutions into client operations, as detailed in the report.
This strategic move emerges at a time when AI technologies are projected to disrupt the conventional consulting sector by automating numerous data-driven tasks traditionally performed by human analysts.
Dispute with the U.S. Government
The ongoing conflict originates from the restrictions imposed on military applications of Anthropic’s technology. The startup has sought guarantees ensuring that its AI systems would not be utilized for mass surveillance of American citizens or for the deployment of autonomous weaponry.
Tensions heightened following Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s declaration of the firm as a “supply chain risk,” resulting in a prohibition on the use of its tools by the Department of Defense and its contractors.
The Pentagon has communicated to its leadership that the use of Anthropic’s AI technologies, including Claude AI, might be extended beyond the previously specified six-month phase-out period if considered critical for national security interests.
In response to these developments, Anthropic has initiated legal action against the Defense Department, urging swift judicial intervention to counter the government’s designation. The company has claimed that this situation could result in substantial financial losses, as previously reported by Bloomberg.
Support from the Tech Community
Anthropic’s legal battle has garnered support from prominent technology firms. Notably, Microsoft challenged Hegseth’s actions in a legal filing last week, demonstrating solidarity with Anthropic.
Additionally, a coalition of AI researchers and scientists from OpenAI and Google—both competitors and, in the case of Google, also an investor—have rallied behind Anthropic via a joint letter addressed to the presiding judge.
Their correspondence asserted that current AI systems are incapable of “safely or reliably managing fully autonomous lethal targeting” and should not be employed for domestic mass surveillance of American citizens, as reported by Bloomberg.
