In his correspondence with Business Insider, Brown expanded on his career journey, discussed on the YC’s “Lightcone Podcast,” where he underscored the importance of self-education and strategic networking in his ascendance within the AI sector.
His professional trajectory included an early position at Grouper, an app designed for facilitating group dates. Notably, Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, was an early enthusiast of Grouper.
Brown recounted, “At Stripe, Greg actively engaged in our platform by posting ‘I’m going on Grouper, who’s going?’ for an entire year. Through this connection, I developed a relationship with him that became pivotal for my entry into OpenAI.”
In a follow-up communication with Business Insider, Brown elaborated on the significance of networking, the vehicle for his connection with Brockman.
“Surround yourself with individuals whom you admire,” he advised. “Over time, you’ll inevitably adapt and grow to mirror their attributes.”
He further emphasized the merit of mentorship: “Learning is exponentially easier when one has at least one mentor as well as a cohort of friends to learn alongside.”
Before the rise of consumer-oriented AI solutions like ChatGPT, the realm of working with large language models seemed cloaked in an air of exclusivity — a notion that made Brown question his own aptitude.
“At that moment, it appeared to necessitate exceptional brilliance to contribute meaningfully,” he admitted during the podcast. “Consequently, I grappled with substantial uncertainty regarding my capability to assist.”
He noted that a leap of “courage” was essential as he committed to delving into AI research. It took him six months of rigorous self-study to feel competent enough to join the field without being a hindrance.
Another salient piece of advice Brown imparted was understanding one’s utility in an organization.
“Reach out to individuals engaged in the work you aspire to pursue and articulate your intentions to contribute,” he suggested. “Most will welcome assistance and provide constructive feedback on your approach.”
Brown also shared the resources that proved beneficial during his self-study tenure, endorsing “Linear Algebra Done Right” by Sheldon Axler, alongside Google DeepMind’s e-book, “How to Scale Your Model.” He found the career transition platform 80,000 Hours particularly beneficial.
On the podcast, he also alluded to additional self-educational tools, including various Coursera courses and participation in Kaggle projects. He even leveraged a Y Combinator alumni credit to acquire a GPU.
Following his immersive endeavor within AI research, Brown persistently contacted Brockman to express his desire for collaboration.
“As soon as OpenAI was announced, I reached out to Greg, saying, ‘I’d love to assist in any capacity. While I only got a B- in linear algebra, I possess some engineering skills and have engaged in distributed systems work. I’m willing to undertake any task, even mopping floors if necessary. My ambition is to contribute somehow,” Brown recounted.
Ultimately, Brockman assigned him to a gaming project at OpenAI, though it was not until nine months later that Brown engaged with machine learning.
In 2021, Brown transitioned from OpenAI to co-found Anthropic with Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and others.
Brown cautioned that his approach back then may not be applicable in today’s AI landscape: “My method was effective in 2015, but I question its relevance now,” he remarked.
Nevertheless, he offered sage counsel to aspiring AI professionals.
“Embrace calculated risks, and endeavor to pursue projects that would not only excite your peers but also embody a more aspirational version of yourself,” he advised.
In his email to Business Insider, Brown encouraged youth to dive into their work directly.
“The optimal path to mastering a skill is often through hands-on experience,” he stated. “Engage in activities, identify your shortcomings, and that will illuminate where you need further practice.”
To mitigate potential setbacks, Brown imparted the wisdom: “Maintain a frugal lifestyle.”
