Panos Panay, the visionary at the helm of Amazon’s devices and services division, has outlined a transformative paradigm shift in consumer technology.
He asserts that the current landscape—dominated by smartphones and applications—is nearing a critical inflection point, largely propelled by the proliferation of social media and the advent of generative AI.
Panay envisions a future where the younger demographic engages with technology in a manner unbound by screens, characterizing this evolution as “ambient intelligence.”
During his address at the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference, Panay elucidated the concept of an “ambient” technological future—a realm where devices elegantly recede into the periphery of everyday life, as younger users exhibit diminishing interest in “doom scrolling.”
“A whole younger generation is emerging that I believe will eventually tire of doom scrolling,” he remarked, adding, “They will innovate their thinking. It’s imperative to provide them with products that seamlessly integrate into their environment—devices they may not anticipate, yet expect to connect effortlessly.”

According to Panay, the trajectory of AI is not merely about enhancing applications, but rather about orchestrating an experience where the app interaction becomes virtually invisible.
“It’s truly exhilarating because it eliminates the need to unlock a phone, navigate to the app, and engage in multiple clicks. You simply pose a question, and it is answered,” he noted.
Panay emphasized that Amazon is diligently steering towards this innovative future by enhancing the capabilities of Alexa within its product line. He suggested that the quintessential form factor for AI assistants remains unfulfilled and that Amazon’s “lab full of ideas” is actively pursuing new avenues.
When probed about potential rivals—including speculated AI hardware from OpenAI and esteemed designer Jony Ive—Panay referenced Amazon’s current portfolio of wearables, such as the Echo Frames and earbuds.

“I envision that users will desire their assistant’s presence wherever they venture,” he articulated.
On the subject of security, Panay asserted that this aspect is non-negotiable. “I regard it as a covenant with our customers; if we breach that trust, we risk losing their loyalty,” he underscored.
