Advancements in Apple’s Shortcuts: A New Era of AI Integration
Since its inception in 2018, Apple’s Shortcuts app has undergone a transformative upgrade through the integration of artificial intelligence.
While not a fervent admirer of Apple’s AI, I concede that its implementation within the Shortcuts app exemplifies a rare instance where AI significantly enhances user experience.
Users can already explore an array of custom shortcuts crafted by others, but the recent enhancements allow the creation of personalized shortcuts utilizing natural language prompts.
For those utilizing iOS 27 on compatible iPhones, crafting a shortcut is as simple as articulating your request in descriptive, plain English.
Begin by launching the preinstalled Shortcuts app—or download it from the App Store should it have been previously removed.
Selecting the prominent “+” icon at the bottom unveils a text entry box for describing your desired shortcut functionality. After assembling the shortcut, promptly tap the play button to test its efficacy.
Examining the Reliability of Apple Intelligence in Shortcut Creation
The Shortcuts app on iPhone offers a vast array of automation possibilities, which, in theory, Apple Intelligence could facilitate seamlessly.
However, users may encounter challenges that necessitate trial and error or manual refinements to achieve the intended shortcut performance. Fortunately, shortcuts generated via Apple Intelligence remain fully editable.
To illustrate, I once requested a shortcut to automatically switch my display to grayscale upon launching Instagram, reverting to color when quitting the application.
While the shortcut successfully engaged the grayscale feature initially, it faltered in disabling the filter upon exiting Instagram. My interactions with Apple Intelligence led to the creation of two distinct shortcuts instead.
Throughout my experimentation with the Shortcuts app and Apple Intelligence, I discovered that the application generally does not outright refuse to generate a shortcut—even if the outcomes may not meet my initial expectations.
On a few occasions involving implausible prompts, the app appropriately recognized the infeasibility of the request.
However, more often than not, it synthesizes alternative actions that it deems satisfactory. For instance, when I tasked it with powering off my iPhone upon the battery descending below 20 percent, it instead opted to merely lock the screen, a commendable attempt but ultimately incorrect.
Exploring Additional Capabilities of Apple Intelligence
While the ability to generate shortcuts through natural language is undeniably beneficial, it is not the sole enhancement introduced by Apple.
The Shortcuts app now enables the creation of shortcuts that leverage Apple Intelligence for tasks such as text generation and data processing.
During manual shortcut creation, selecting Apple Intelligence grants access to the “Use Model” action, allowing users to send requests to an AI model, process them, and derive a response that can be utilized in subsequent shortcut actions.
Users can choose from various AI models, including Cloud, Cloud Pro, and On-Device options, as well as the opportunity to integrate ChatGPT for utilizing OpenAI’s models.
Apple Intelligence appears adept at generating text, as evidenced when I tasked it with retrieving an article from a URL, summarizing its content, and saving it to the Notes app.
This functionality can be further enhanced by making the shortcut readily accessible when tapping the Share button.
To achieve this, navigate to the Shortcuts app, select your desired shortcut, press the “i” button, and enable the “Show in Share Sheet” toggle.
As with previous instances, the ultimate effectiveness of these shortcuts hinges on how accurately Apple Intelligence interprets your request and organizes the requisite actions.
One particularly straightforward yet effective shortcut I devised successfully saved photos captured with my iPhone’s telephoto lens into a dedicated album.
When functioning optimally, the integration of Apple Intelligence within the Shortcuts app is nothing short of revolutionary.

However, users are advised to utilize the “Edit” function post-generation to meticulously verify the combined actions before placing full reliance on the newly created shortcut.
