Anticipation Grows for Apple’s Foldable iPhone
As the buzz intensifies surrounding Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, dummy models have emerged, providing a tantalizing glimpse into what the tech giant may unveil later this year.
Vadim Yuryev from the YouTube channel Max Tech has released a series of images and a video comparing this innovative design to existing Apple products, enhancing our understanding of its potential features.
The internal display of the foldable iPhone is reported to feature a 4:3 aspect ratio, akin to that of an iPad, complemented by an OLED screen approximately the size of an iPad mini when fully extended.
Speculation indicates that the device will measure 5.5 inches in its closed position and open up to 7.8 inches, positioning it just below the 8.3-inch iPad mini showcased in the accompanying images.
In juxtaposition to the iPhone 17 Pro Max in landscape mode, Yuryev notes that the width of the foldable device remains comparable.
However, the display boasts an impressive 56.9 percent increase in height (71 mm versus 111.5 mm). This adjustment is expected to elevate the video viewing experience in a 16:9 format, potentially making it an exciting option for gamers utilizing on-screen controls.
Yuryev also provided insight into the interaction with the device’s outer display, which may be smaller than anticipated.
Reports from The Information suggest a measurement of merely 5.3 inches—slightly less than the 5.4-inch screen on the iPhone 13 mini; yet, consensus among other sources leans towards 5.5 inches. This discrepancy may require users with larger hands to adapt to the design.
Additional images offer a glimpse of the device’s profile in its closed state. A power button incorporating Touch ID and a dedicated Camera Control button stand out on the right side, with volume controls positioned similarly to the iPad mini along the top edge.
Notably, Face ID is unlikely to be included due to spatial limitations, while Camera Control is anticipated to be a significant feature, allowing users to secure their grip while adjusting settings, or to operate the device with one hand if needed.
Pay attention to the distinctive raised camera bump or “plateau,” which does not extend across the entirety of the device’s rear. This feature accommodates a dual-lens camera system, diverging from expectations of a triple-lens configuration.
Yuryev asserts that his dummy model stands at precisely 11 mm in thickness when closed, a contrast to previous forecasts suggesting the foldable might be around 9 mm to 9.5 mm in that position.
He confidently declares his model’s accuracy, likening it to last year’s iPhone 17 Pro units. While he did not disclose the thickness when opened, some rumors propose a slim 4.5 mm, potentially making the foldable iPhone Apple’s most svelte offering to date.
Looking ahead, Apple is poised to introduce the foldable iPhone in September, coinciding with the unveiling of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
The dimensions of these new models are expected to mirror those of the iPhone 17 Pro series, though with a reduced Dynamic Island and, based on the dummy models, a more pronounced camera plateau featuring lenses that protrude considerably.
The moniker “iPhone Ultra” has been suggested by a reliable Chinese leaker for Apple’s inaugural foldable device.
