Apple Introduces the MacBook Neo, a Budget-Friendly Laptop
For many years, entering the Mac ecosystem was achievable only through a $999 investment in a laptop. However, on Wednesday, Apple Inc. significantly reduced this hurdle by unveiling the MacBook Neo, which is priced at a starting point of merely $599.
The MacBook Neo, characterized by its vibrant aesthetics and featherlight design, is powered by an iPhone-grade A18 Pro chip.
This launch is the culmination of a three-day hardware showcase that also included the latest iterations of the iPhone 17e, iPad Air, and updates to the MacBook Pro series.
This budget-friendly laptop marks Apple’s first notable foray into the cost-effective segment in over a decade, showcasing its ambition to compete head-to-head with Google’s Chromebooks and affordable Windows devices, which have increasingly gained traction in educational institutions and among first-time buyers.
John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, articulated the uniqueness of their offering, stating, “There is simply no other laptop like it.”
The MacBook Neo boasts a 13-inch display, a sleek metal chassis, and an inviting array of colors. Its design is tailored to present a more approachable option compared to Apple’s more premium laptop lineup.
Availability and Features
The MacBook Neo will be available for pre-order starting Wednesday, with shipments commencing on March 11. Apple touts impressive battery longevity, claiming up to 16 hours of use on a single charge.
The device will be available in a palette of colors, including indigo, blush, citrus, and silver, complemented by dual side-firing speakers.
Prior to the official announcement, whispers about the MacBook Neo had circulated widely. On Tuesday, Apple inadvertently revealed a regulatory filing for the device, designated Model A3404, on its EU compliance page before retracting it, thus confirming speculations about an impending budget MacBook.
Distinct from the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, which utilize Apple’s M-series processors, the Neo employs the A18 Pro chip from Apple’s smartphone lineup.
This strategic choice enables Apple to lower its pricing significantly, despite a decrease in processing power compared to its more robust counterparts.
Market Impact and Strategy
Throughout this week, Apple has emphasized advancements in processing speed, increased memory, and deeper integration of Apple Intelligence across its entire product range, including these newly affordable devices.

The Neo specifically targets a demographic largely overlooked by Apple—students, budget-conscious families, and the numerous iPhone users who have yet to embrace a Mac.
Despite these efforts, Apple faced a nearly 7% dip in Mac revenue, totaling $8.39 billion during the holiday quarter, which fell short of analysts’ projections of $9 billion.
This downturn occurs concurrently with price hikes across Apple’s laptop offerings.
Most notably, the MacBook Air has seen a $100 price increase, with the 13-inch M5 model now starting at $1,099.
Meanwhile, the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Max has experienced a substantial $400 surge, bringing its starting price to $3,899.
