In advance of delivering the Michael Faraday prize lecture at the Royal Society on Wednesday evening—titled “This is not the AI we were promised”—Wooldridge indicated that a scenario akin to the Hindenburg tragedy was “entirely plausible” as companies accelerate the deployment of increasingly sophisticated AI tools.

Historically, the Hindenburg, a colossal 245-meter airship, met its tragic fate during a landing attempt in New Jersey in 1937, erupting into flames and claiming 36 lives. This dire incident was triggered by a spark igniting the vast reserve of hydrogen that kept the airship airborne.

“The Hindenburg disaster obliterated public interest in airships; it marked the end of an era for that technology, and a similar fate looms for AI,” cautioned Wooldridge. Given AI’s integration into myriad systems, a significant debacle could disrupt nearly any industry.

While many experts forecasted that AI would deliver precise, sound solutions, “modern AI is neither sound nor complete; it remains highly approximate,” he noted.

This discrepancy arises from the functioning of large language models that underpin current AI chatbots, which generate responses by predicting subsequent words based on probabilistic distributions gleaned during training.

Consequently, this leads to erratic capabilities, rendering these systems remarkably proficient in some areas yet woefully deficient in others.

Wooldridge elaborated that AI chatbots often err unpredictably and lack self-awareness in their inaccuracies, yet they are programmed to communicate with undue assurance.

When presented with a human-like demeanor, these responses can easily mislead users, creating the risk of individuals perceiving AIs as sentient.

In a 2025 survey conducted by the Center for Democracy and Technology, nearly a third of students reported having engaged in romantic relations with an AI.

“Businesses strive to portray AIs as exceedingly human-like, yet this is a perilous path,” Wooldridge cautioned. “We must recognize them as merely advanced tools, nothing more.”

In contrast to contemporary AI portrayals, Wooldridge finds merit in the depiction of AI from the early days of Star Trek. In one particular 1968 episode, “The Day of the Dove,” Mr. Spock queries the ship’s computer, only to be informed in a distinctly non-human voice that it possesses “insufficient data to answer.”
