Concerns Over AI Tools: Hype or Genuine Hazard?

The trepidation surrounding AI technologies appears exaggerated. Despite showcasing significant capabilities for enhancing office productivity, these tools are ill-equipped for widespread implementation and may even pose risks for the enterprises that adopt them.

Crucially, they remain tethered to the same software and data frameworks that investors naively envision them replacing.

In the aftermath of recent market fluctuations, an array of companies within the software, media, and information sectors may present enticing investment opportunities.

Private equity investors are undoubtedly keen; in a recent Davos interview, Orlando Bravo, founder of the private equity firm Thoma Bravo, echoed this sentiment.

Notably, Salesforce, a vanguard in cloud computing, is currently trading at a mere 15 times its projected earnings, marking its lowest price-to-earnings ratio in history.

The catalysts of recent selloffs all stem from Claude Cowork, a desktop agent that is presently exclusive to Mac systems. These agents utilize large-language models to perform a myriad of intricate tasks initiated by a straightforward prompt.

For instance: “Review my emails and messages, identify all deliverables due this week, and compose initial drafts, incorporating any relevant charts and slide presentations. Subsequently, send the drafts to the team and request their feedback.”

On Wednesday, Anthropic unveiled ten new plugins for Cowork, designed to facilitate tasks across diverse sectors, including sales, finance, legal, and customer support. This revelation extended anxiety about agent disruptions beyond enterprise software to encompass information services.

Consequently, shares of Thomson Reuters plummeted by 16%, while S&P Global and WPP witnessed declines of 11% and 13%, respectively.

Science fiction luminary Arthur C. Clarke once articulated, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” When operational, these agents certainly evoke a sense of enchantment.

However, their effectiveness is not guaranteed. Granting comprehensive access and capabilities can lead to significant mishaps.

Apprehensions surrounding AI largely stem from misconceptions regarding the functioning of large-language models such as Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These systems are essentially sophisticated probabilistic engines that construct sentences one word at a time, drawing from their training data.

Ultimately, they strive to mimic human expression, whether that of a distinguished physicist or a social media provocateur. Their adeptness at emulating human speech prompts the attribution of concepts like “reasoning” and “emotion,” despite the fact that these machines possess neither.

Although these models exhibit remarkable fluency, they frequently generate plausible yet misleading assertions, colloquially termed “hallucinations.”

While considerable research has been directed at mitigating these anomalies, they remain an unresolved challenge, with the reasons for their occurrence still shrouded in uncertainty.

In minuscule print at the bottom of its Claude chatbot, Anthropic cautions that “Claude is AI and can make mistakes. Please double-check cited sources.” Personal experience with Claude, ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini corroborates the validity of this precaution.

Anthropic further advises, “Users should not depend on Claude as a definitive source of truth and should carefully review any high-stakes counsel provided by Claude.”

Does this indeed seem to be a trustworthy assistant to whom one might entrust access to their computer?

This concern transcends mere theory; the hazards of hallucinations are already manifesting in the real world.

Shares of Thomson Reuters, which supplies essential news and information services to the legal sector, suffered significant declines due to the introduction of the Cowork legal plugin, which purports to “analyze contracts, triage NDAs, navigate compliance, assess risk, prepare for meetings, and draft standardized responses.”

However, attorneys employing AI language models to expedite their workflows have encountered numerous pitfalls. Damien Charlotin, a researcher at HEC business school, maintains a record of incidents in which lawyers submitted AI-generated briefs that featured entirely fabricated legal precedents and quotes.

The tally has surged to 355 incidents, including 34 recorded in 2026. Many of these attorneys now face potential fines, professional sanctions, and may be subject to malpractice litigation by clients.

“The primary takeaway is that Claude can enact potentially perilous actions,” stated Anthropic in the safety guidelines accompanying the Cowork launch announcement. The firm also cautioned against employing Cowork for tasks governed by regulations, such as handling medical records.

Furthermore, agents remain susceptible to a class of unresolved cyberattacks known as prompt injections—a vulnerability that organizations are ill-prepared to combat.

This is not to suggest that agents will perpetually struggle with hallucinations and security vulnerabilities. A day will come when they can seamlessly handle business tasks, but that day is not imminent. Entities employing these tools for mission-critical responsibilities today may soon find themselves embroiled in a calamity.

Nonetheless, agents are not the culmination of software development. On GitHub, the world’s largest code repository, owned by Microsoft, Anthropic provides a roster of software utilized by Claude agents, which comprises many leading software solutions.

Notably, the Cowork legal plugin relies on Microsoft 365, Jira, Slack, and Box to complete its functionality. Thus far, Anthropic has not recreated any of these programs with its own Claude Code agent.

As media and information companies experience diminished valuations in the market, it would be prudent for investors to contemplate broader implications. Training AI models requires access to content—text, images, and videos—produced by humans for the purpose of replication.
