Apple Explores Multiple Foldable iPhone Designs

While the inaugural foldable iPhone is projected to debut in 2026, Apple may subsequently unveil an additional device featuring an alternative folding mechanism. Apple is reportedly planning multiple foldable iPhone models, with a clamshell version possibly launching after its first foldable phone.
As reported by Mark Gurman in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Apple is investigating various foldable formats as part of its long-term iPhone strategy. Initially, the focal point is a book-style foldable, colloquially dubbed the iPhone Fold.
However, the company is also contemplating a more compact folding phone that operates vertically, akin to existing clamshell models on the market, informally referred to as the iPhone Flip.
Projected Timeline for iPhone Flip
Gurman posits that the first foldable iPhone could reach consumers in the latter half of 2026. The iPhone Flip, contingent on production approval, will launch subsequent to the iPhone Fold’s introduction. At this juncture, Apple has yet to validate any plans for such a device, leaving its development in a state of ambiguity.
The iPhone Flip is anticipated to showcase a square-shaped clamshell form, placing it within the same category as competing flip-style smartphones.

Exploration of Larger Foldable Models

This model could augment the iPhone Fold in the product lineup. Recent leaks suggest that the first foldable iPhone may utilize a 5.5-inch outer display, rendering it smaller than several competing devices. A larger variant could address consumer demand for a more expansive screen when unfolded.
Previous reports have indicated that Apple is striving to minimize the crease surrounding the hinge area, a persistent flaw in numerous foldable phones. Leaked CAD renders imply a flatter folding surface. The iPhone Fold is expected to be equipped with two rear cameras and dual front-facing cameras.
On the hardware front, the iPhone Fold is projected to operate on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, fabricated via 2nm process technology. The device may also integrate Apple’s C2 modem for connectivity and could feature Touch ID embedded in the power button for user authentication.
