Mondi Enhances Commitment to eCommerce Packaging Innovation
Mondi, an internationally recognized leader in sustainable packaging and paper products, is further solidifying its dedication to advancing eCommerce packaging.
By leveraging vast expertise in materials science, design, and packaging methodologies, the company has established a cutting-edge testing facility where solutions endure intense stress assessments mimicking real-world logistics scenarios.
Mondi’s specialists are collaborating closely with partners to develop innovative packaging solutions that align with sustainability objectives while optimizing performance throughout the supply chain.
To expedite this transformative journey, Gavin Mounce has assumed the role of eCommerce Innovation and Application Director at Mondi, effective November 1, 2025.
With extensive experience spanning both retailer and supplier arenas in packaging design and innovation management, he will spearhead efforts to cultivate new concepts and enhance collaboration within Mondi’s paper, product design, and converting domains.
“Innovation in eCommerce packaging is fundamentally about delivering value to both customers and the environment,” stated Armand Schoonbrood, COO of Mondi eCommerce.
“Gavin’s retailer-centric perspective will be instrumental in crafting packaging solutions that benefit individuals and the planet alike.”
“I am eager to lead a team dedicated to translating groundbreaking ideas into practical, tested solutions—from conception to the customer’s door,” remarked Gavin Mounce.
Among Mondi’s accolades is the creation of the Protective Mailer, an entirely recyclable paper envelope that eliminates the requirement for plastic bubble wrap while providing superior product protection through the use of open flute paper.
Developed alongside one of the premier online marketplaces, this solution epitomizes Mondi’s ethos of co-creation, encouraging innovative thinking, and harnessing its comprehensive eCommerce portfolio—from paper to cartons and bags—to deliver eco-friendly packaging alternatives.
ISTA-Certified Testing: Verifying Performance through Real-Life Simulation
Mondi operates a specialized facility known as ThinkBox Bupak, located in Budweis, Czech Republic. This customer engagement center hosts innovation workshops, facilitates on-site co-creation of packaging prototypes, and aligns customer requirements with Mondi’s packaging proficiency.
The hub is outfitted with an ISTA-certified testing laboratory, ensuring that every innovation is rigorously evaluated under actual logistics conditions.
The laboratory conducts standardized ISTA transit assessments, simulating authentic shipping and handling challenges to ascertain that packaging solutions adequately protect products across the supply chain.
The ISTA certification has been officially renewed until October 1, 2027, reaffirming Mondi’s status as a Certified Testing Laboratory member of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA).
Testing is an integral component of innovation. A concept is only as valuable as its practical efficacy. Our ISTA-certified laboratory guarantees that every solution withstands the journey from warehouse to customer.
The ISTA certification underscores the reliability of our processes and evidences our commitment to delivering packaging that excels at every juncture of the supply chain, added Armand Schoonbrood.

The laboratory’s experts collaborate closely with clients across diverse sectors to delineate testing parameters, providing rapid turnaround times for standardized test reports and recommendations for enhancements, such as alternative board grades or design modifications.
Furthermore, the Mondi ISTA laboratory is also recognized by Amazon under the APASS (Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier) Network, enabling customers to certify their packaging in compliance with Amazon’s Tier 1–3 requirements (FFP, SIOC, and PFP), thereby supporting the industry-wide initiative to minimize packaging volume and waste within eCommerce logistics.
