Federal Government Launches National Digital Trustmark Initiative

October 10, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the National Digital Trustmark (NDTM), an innovative framework aimed at authenticating online enterprises, safeguarding consumers, and addressing the surging incidents of e-commerce fraud across the nation.

This pioneering initiative, cultivated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, is integral to bolstering trust, transparency, and accountability within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

During the launch held in Abuja, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, heralded the Digital Trustmark as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s journey toward enhanced digital governance.

The Minister articulated that the initiative would function as an official stamp of verification for legitimate online businesses and service providers, assisting consumers in distinguishing credible platforms with confidence.

Tijani stated, “The advent of the Digital Trustmark underscores our persistent dedication to fostering a secure, dependable, and inclusive digital landscape.”

“By establishing explicit verification standards, we are championing equitable business practices, mitigating online fraud, and amplifying confidence in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

NITDA Details Compliance and Certification Procedure

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director-General of NITDA, elucidated that the Trustmark would be conferred upon online businesses that adhere to data protection, cybersecurity, and service quality criteria delineated by the agency.

Eligible businesses will be permitted to showcase the Digital Trustmark seal on their websites and e-commerce platforms, signifying compliance with national standards for safety and reliability.

“This Trustmark will not only serve as a verification instrument but also as a catalyst for promoting transparency, fortifying consumer protection, and enhancing accountability in the digital economy,” Abdullahi remarked.

He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s ambition to establish Nigeria as a competitive epicenter for digital commerce and innovation, while concurrently empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to flourish within a regulated and secure online environment.

Enhancing Confidence in Digital Transactions

Nigeria’s e-commerce sector has witnessed exponential growth in recent years, spurred by increased smartphone penetration, the expansion of digital payment systems, and the proliferation of online marketplaces.

However, this expansion has been paralleled by a rise in cybercrime, fraudulent listings, and consumer skepticism—issues that the Digital Trustmark is designed to address.

This framework complements existing regulatory instruments, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the National Cybersecurity Policy, aiming to construct a cohesive and safer digital landscape.

By validating authentic businesses and bolstering consumer trust, the Federal Government anticipates that the Digital Trustmark will catalyze greater private sector investment, enhance digital inclusivity, and position Nigeria as a regional frontrunner in reliable online commerce.
