BP Leverages Innovative Technologies to Optimize US Operations
BP is strategically utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and other avant-garde technologies to elevate performance throughout its operations in the United States.
By refining its drilling activities in the Gulf of America and enhancing both safety and efficiency at its refineries in Indiana and Washington state, the company is gradually weaving these tools into its operational fabric, thereby unlocking new avenues for growth and value creation.
“Our technological strategy is pivotal for the expansion of oil and gas sectors and is essential in sharpening our downstream operations while judiciously investing in the energy transition,” stated Emeka Emembolu, BP’s executive vice president of technology, in an interview with Bloomberg News.
This initiative holds significant relevance for both BP and the United States, with all major sectors represented. The corporation remains committed to bolstering investments in the nation, particularly within the oil and gas production landscape, to address the burgeoning demand.
Five Key Innovations Driving BP’s Performance Enhancement:
1. Optimizing Oil and Gas Drilling
BP employs advanced technology from its Houston-based high-performance computing facility, which substantially shortens the duration required to identify ideal drilling paths in regions like the Gulf of America and Permian Basin.
This tool analyzes geological data to establish the safest and most advantageous drilling trajectories, reducing a previously protracted process from months to mere days. A comprehensive understanding of subsurface formations enables BP to effectively locate and extract the most lucrative oil deposits.
2. Digital Modeling
BP has integrated AI with cloud-based virtual simulations of its offshore platforms to facilitate remote planning of maintenance tasks and enhance the functionality of intricate systems. These virtual constructs, referred to as “digital twins,” can be accessed globally, significantly lessening the necessity for personnel to travel to offshore locations.
Utilizing laser scanning technology and machine learning, these models gather data to prioritize maintenance efforts.
This innovative approach is instrumental in BP’s commitment to operate with heightened safety and efficiency.
3. Enhancing Onshore Efficiency
BpX Energy, BP’s onshore oil and gas division in the US, is trialing AI-generated “morning reports,” which provide critical production insights designed to streamline frontline operations. This application of AI is further augmenting efficiency in operational capacities while simultaneously reducing expenditures.

4. Accelerated Data Analysis
BP’s refineries are collaborating with firms specializing in data analysis and intelligence software, with the objective of enhancing operational efficiencies and bolstering competitiveness.
At the Whiting refinery in northwest Indiana, near Chicago, teams are investigating technologies that expedite the interpretation of information and furnish insights directly to frontline operators and skilled-trade personnel.
This technology facilitates near-real-time data analysis to assist in pre-job safety assessments and swift financial decisions, potentially resulting in significant cost savings.
5. Mitigating Disruptions
BP employs a machine learning tool to bolster human capabilities in identifying and forecasting issues relating to offshore production equipment in the Gulf of America.
This system proactively alerts teams to potential failures, enabling them to address concerns before they escalate into more significant problems. Such foresight not only mitigates production challenges but also enhances overall operational reliability.
