Google Expands AI Mode Search to Include Japanese

TOKYO – Google LLC has broadened the language capabilities of its AI Mode search service to incorporate Japanese, with the new feature becoming accessible to users on Tuesday.

This complimentary AI-driven search function now facilitates users in obtaining answers to intricate inquiries seamlessly in Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese, and English.

Leveraging Google’s proprietary Gemini 2.5 AI, which meticulously analyzes online information, users can enter queries in a conversational format directly into the search bar.

For instance, typing in “What equipment is essential for brewing coffee based on different methods, how user-friendly it is, and how it influences flavor,” will generate a comparative list of brewing devices alongside their taste profiles.

The results page also prominently displays links to the sources that informed the AI’s responses.

“This expansion empowers a broader audience to utilize AI Mode for probing intricate questions in their preferred language, while delving deeper into the web via the provided links,” stated Hema Budaraju, a senior official in Google’s search division.

In May, Google debuted AI Mode in the United States, following the introduction of AI Overviews, which streamlines the search process by delivering AI-generated summaries of essential information. This strategic move is widely viewed as a response to diminishing engagement with traditional Google searches, largely attributed to the rise of ChatGPT and similar conversational AI platforms.

Holding approximately a 90% stake in the online search market, Google garners nearly 60% of its parent company Alphabet Inc.’s revenue from search-related advertising. Nonetheless, reports suggest that the company’s market share may plummet below 50% within the next five years.

A July report from the Pew Research Center revealed that many Google search users appreciate the AI-generated summaries, which have decreased the incidence of users clicking on displayed links from 15% to 8%.

The proliferation of AI search functionalities has coincided with a 50% drop in traffic to the U.S. news website Business Insider over the past three years.

The implementation of AI Mode is anticipated to further exacerbate these trends in the foreseeable future.

In May, the News/Media Alliance, a nonprofit consortium representing over 2,200 U.S. publishers, voiced apprehensions that AI Mode might further erode the traffic and revenue of “publishers of original content.”
