Apple plans to unveil the iPhone 17 Series on September 17, 2025. In preparation for this event, the smartphone price comparison platform SellCell conducted a survey in August involving over 2,000 iPhone users across the United States.
The results showed that 68.3% of participants are considering an upgrade to the new models, in contrast to 61.9% indicated during the iPhone 16 pre-launch period last year — a year-on-year increase of 1.4% in demand.
Pro and Pro Max Steal the Spotlight
Among the cohort eager for an upgrade, a notable proportion is inclined towards the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, with 38.1% expressing a preference for these high-end variants. In comparison, 16.7% opted for the standard iPhone 17, while 13.5% displayed interest in the forthcoming ultra-sleek iPhone 17 Air, and a mere 3.3% demonstrated enthusiasm for a foldable iPhone.
Battery Life Leads the Aspirational List
When probed about motivations for upgrading, 53% of respondents identified enhanced battery life as their foremost reason. Other factors included aesthetic and functional redesign (36.2%), next-generation display technology (34.3%), and upgraded camera systems (28.1%). Merely 7% noted artificial intelligence features as their primary interest.
Foldable iPhone Contends with Rivals
Apple may encounter significant competition in the foldable smartphone arena. The survey indicated that if Apple does not introduce a foldable iPhone by 2026, roughly 20% of users might transition to Samsung, while 10% could gravitate towards Google’s Pixel offerings. Nevertheless, brand fidelity remains robust, with 70% of users stating that their trust in Apple remains steadfast.
Diverse Reactions to Design & AI
The new ultra-slim design has already elicited conflicting opinions. 47.5% of users are enthusiastic about sleeker models, even if it means sacrificing some battery longevity. Conversely, 30% expressed disinterest in thinner devices.
Regarding artificial intelligence, 44% regard it as crucial, while one-third display minimal enthusiasm. Notably, 44% of users view Apple as the frontrunner in AI innovation, leaving its competitors, Samsung and Google, trailing at a mere 6.6%.

Pricing Remains a Significant Obstacle
Despite the palpable excitement, the cost factor looms large. 69% of respondents cited price as the primary obstacle to upgrading. Furthermore, 71% reported satisfaction with their current iPhones. Approximately 36.8% stated they would postpone an upgrade if prices escalate, while just one-third declared they would proceed with a purchase of the new iPhone regardless of pricing.
In summary, the iPhone 17 Series is poised to become one of Apple’s most-awaited launches, driven by consumer desires for battery enhancements, design innovations, and premium offerings. Nonetheless, the pricing dilemma may ultimately determine the number of users who choose to make the transition.
