VinFast has officially launched its newly established dealership network in California, marking a significant milestone for the Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer.
The grand opening of the first authorized dealership in the Golden State, VinFast San Diego, took place on Tuesday. This event drew considerable attention, featuring company executives, local media representatives, and consumers. Attendees had the opportunity to test drive the brand’s two premier electric SUVs available in the U.S., namely, the mid-size VF 8 and the full-size VF 9.
Operated by the Sunroad Automotive Group, this dealership represents a decisive move in VinFast’s strategy to transition from 15 company-owned retail stores in California to a franchise dealership model.
In an official news release, VinFast emphasized that California remains its top priority while it accelerates the expansion of its dealership network across the nation, citing the state’s “significant EV growth potential.” The company stated it is “actively seeking and evaluating opportunities with prospective dealerships” throughout California.
Mike Nolte, VinFast’s U.S. Vice President of Sales and Marketing, remarked, “The successful grand opening of our San Diego dealership received a favorable response from local consumers. This event signifies a pivotal moment in our objective to develop a robust U.S. dealership network, reaffirming our long-term commitment to California and the broader North American market.”
Nolte further articulated the company’s commitment to sustainable growth by leveraging its partners’ strong reputations, established infrastructures, and deep insights into local markets.
Entering the U.S. market in 2022 with direct sales locations in California, VinFast has shifted its focus to a dealership model following the signing of its first five franchise agreements at the conclusion of 2023, while maintaining its California locations.
The automaker divulged that it has made a strategic decision to transition exclusively to a franchise dealership model in all 50 states, recognizing the unique benefits of this distribution channel to maximize operational efficiency.
Currently, VinFast boasts nearly 30 authorized dealerships across 14 states in the U.S., including five among the six most populous states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois.
VinFast San Diego commenced operations earlier this summer. The dealership is equipped with sales and service operations, including warranty support, maintenance, repairs, and authentic VinFast parts.
Uri Feldman, President of Sunroad Holding Company, which manages 12 dealerships and a collision center in the San Diego vicinity, expressed pride in being VinFast’s inaugural California dealer, noting that the brand is “shaping an exciting new chapter in the global electric vehicle revolution.”
“We have faith in VinFast’s formidable potential to leave an indelible mark on the North American market,” he stated. “At Sunroad, we are committed to being a trusted and strategic ally, partnering to create mutual value, drive growth, and deliver high-quality vehicles alongside exceptional customer experiences.”
NY Dealer Donates to Enhance College’s Auto Tech Program
Jack Weidinger, President of the Weidinger Automotive Group and former chairman of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, has made a significant contribution to the future of the automotive industry by donating $25,000 to Suffolk Community College’s Automotive Technology program.
This generous donation aims to expand training opportunities for students entering the auto service sector, which is currently grappling with a nationwide shortage of technicians.
Suffolk County Community College is undergoing an ambitious expansion, intending to double the size of its automotive program to train more technicians in response to the industry’s escalating demand for skilled professionals.
The institution currently operates New York’s most extensive auto tech program, with 260 full-time students enrolled in a two-year curriculum.
“I take pride in supporting Suffolk Community College’s efforts to create more pathways for the next generation of automotive professionals,” Weidinger remarked. “The demand for highly skilled technicians is more pressing than ever, and this program is vital in helping students launch prosperous, well-paying careers right here on Long Island.”
Weidinger’s family, a third-generation auto dealer, has been selling luxury vehicles on Long Island since 1938. Weidinger Automotive maintains three locations within the New York City area, including two dealerships—North Bay Cadillac GMC and Jaguar Land Rover Freeport—on Long Island.
“Jack’s leadership and dedication to education have consistently stood out,” commented Mark Schienberg, President of GYNADA. “This donation further strengthens the essential partnership between local dealerships and educational institutions to fulfill the growing need for technicians.”
“Suffolk’s expansion will pave new avenues for hundreds of students and fortify the entire automotive industry in our region.”
