Apple Reveals Enhanced iPad Mini with OLED Display and New Features

(Oct 26): On Monday, Apple Inc. introduced an upgraded version of the iPad mini, featuring a striking OLED display, a water-resistant design, and a more powerful processor, marking the commencement of a week filled with product unveilings.

This latest tablet, retailing at US$699 (RM2,854), boasts an 8.5-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen, delivering richer blacks, more luminous whites, and superior contrast.

The display’s dimensions have been subtly enlarged from the previous 8.3 inches by narrowing the bezels surrounding the panel.

Notably, the redesign incorporates a novel “Acoustic Display” audio system that positions the speakers beneath the screen, distinguished as the first iPad to achieve an IP67 dust and water resistance rating.

Weighing in at 14% lighter and 13% thinner than its predecessor, the new iPad mini has also seen a repositioning of its front-facing camera, optimizing it for FaceTime interactions and video conferencing.

At its core, the tablet is powered by the A20 Pro chip, a notable enhancement from the A17 Pro processor featured in its forerunner, which started at US$599.

Customers can choose from standard and matte nano-texture display options, along with storage capacities ranging from 128 gigabytes (GB) to 512GB.

For those opting for the fully loaded version—with maximum storage, an etched matte screen, and cellular capabilities—the price may escalate to as much as US$1,249.

Additionally, Apple has integrated its N1 networking chip into the new model, facilitating WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity for the iPad mini, while the cellular editions are equipped with the latest C2 modem.

The debut of the latest iPad mini heralds a series of product announcements from Apple slated for late October.

In the days ahead, the tech giant plans to reveal a new iMac and a 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M6 chip, culminating in the week’s finale with the introduction of its inaugural touch-screen MacBook Pro.

Pre-orders for the revamped iPad mini will commence on Wednesday, with official availability set for November 6. The device will be available in enticing “midnight” and “starlight” color variants.

The A20 Pro chip included in the iPad mini is presented in two versions: the 128GB and 256GB models feature five CPU cores, while the higher-end variant offers six cores paired with seven graphics cores.

Notably, the premium model also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine, significantly enhancing artificial intelligence processing capabilities.

On Wednesday, Apple will host a launch event in Los Angeles, granting members of the press and creators an opportunity to engage directly with the newly announced devices.

This event caps a prolific year for Apple, which recently launched the iPhone Duo, its first foray into foldable smartphones, just last Friday.

Three foldable smartphones with large touchscreens and metallic edges are displayed on a gray surface, two partially open and one fully flat.

Bloomberg News initially reported on the upcoming iPad mini last year. The company continues to innovate, with plans for a new entry-level iPad, an OLED iPad Air, and a refreshed iPad Pro expected in the first half of the upcoming year.
