Google Introduces Advanced Agentic Features in Search
In a significant announcement, Google unveiled innovative agentic functionalities to enhance its Search platform.
These enhancements include information agents designed to autonomously scour the web on behalf of users, alongside the introduction of the Universal Cart, which consolidates product offerings from various retailers and services into a singular platform.
This announcement was made during the Google I/O 2026 event. The rollout of information agents commenced earlier this summer, specifically for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Simultaneously, the Universal Cart has become operational within Google Search and Gemini across the United States.
Information agents are designed to continuously monitor internet changes post a user’s initial query, providing what Elizabeth Reid, Google’s VP of Search, describes as “an intelligent, synthesized update, possessing the capability to take action.”
Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, addressed this development in a posting on X:
The Universal Cart is poised to serve as a central nexus for online shopping through Google. While transactions are finalized on the merchants’ sites, Google facilitates price comparisons and deal identification.
Shoppers can now establish price alerts, have promotional codes applied automatically, and complete purchases using Google Pay.
In the near future, Universal Cart will extend its services to well-known merchants, including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and Shopify.
Additionally, a series of related updates are underway:
- Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) permits users to implement guidelines concerning budgetary constraints and brand preferences for automatic transactions.
- Expansion of agentic booking will encompass local experiences and services.
- Checkout experiences enabled by Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) are being broadened to include Canada and Australia, with plans for the U.K. to follow.
Implications of Enhanced Agentic Features for Marketers
The introduction of information agents may lead to a decrease in website traffic, as these agents simplify the user’s search journey. However, the traffic that does materialize is expected to exhibit heightened intent.
Essentially, users arriving at a website after an agent has curated and synthesized information are likely further along in their purchasing journey and may be poised to convert.
This shift underscores the importance of conversion readiness alongside visibility. Key pages must be optimized to attract high-intent traffic and effectively progress them through the buying cycle.
For ecommerce brands gearing up for the transition to agentic commerce, achieving readiness for UCP is paramount.
The Universal Cart employs UCP to process transactions. As the Universal Cart expands, maintaining a UCP-compliant store is essential for visibility among users shopping on Google. Our UCP guide outlines the requirements for eligibility.
Strategies to Prepare for Agentic Commerce
First and foremost, ensure your store is enabled for UCP. With Universal Cart now live, stores lacking UCP support cannot feature in shoppers’ carts.
Next, establish the fundamentals of agentic search. This includes optimizing for entity clarity, topical authority, and an organized structure. Regularly assess your outcomes to determine if your AI visibility is improving.
