Samsung Retains Dominance in a Declining Smartphone Market

In a surprising turn of events, South Korean powerhouse Samsung has secured its leading position within the smartphone realm, albeit with a slight reduction in shipments.

Concurrently, U.S. tech titan Apple has managed to maintain its stake among the top five competitors in the industry, even as it grapples with a significant 20 percent decrease in shipping figures compared to the previous year.

Market intelligence firm Omdia issued a report on Monday indicating that South Korea’s smartphone market is projected to have plummeted to its lowest ebb in a decade, witnessing a staggering 26 percent drop in shipments in the third quarter of 2026, as relayed by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The analysis revealed that India’s smartphone shipments have declined year-on-year (YoY) by 26 percent, totaling 35.8 million units in the third quarter of 2026.

This figure marks the most dismal performance for this segment since 2016, occurring even amid the onset of the festive season.

Factors contributing to this decline include escalating smartphone prices and a more cautious mindset among consumers, which together have tapered the demand for replacements and prompted vendors to adopt more conservative inventory strategies.

Additionally, a lack of robust online sales further exacerbated pressures on the market. The timing of the festive season, particularly with Diwali shifting to November, has also delayed offline inventory preparations, leading to reduced activity during the September quarter.

Samsung’s Strategic Supremacy

Despite a minor decrease in shipments, Samsung has regained its prime position for the first time since the first quarter of 2024, dispatching 6.7 million units.

This resurgence has been bolstered by its successful Galaxy A07, A17, and A27 models, coupled with the enhanced offerings from the Galaxy S26 series, including the innovative Z foldables and the S26 FE.

Samsung’s diverse product portfolio has been further supported by bank cashback incentives, exchange benefits, and sustainable financing options across various price points.

With a market share of 19 percent, Samsung’s shipments experienced a marginal decline of approximately 1 percent, totaling 6.7 million units during the reviewed quarter.

Declining Shipments Among Chinese Competitors

Chinese manufacturer Vivo has reportedly undergone the most severe contraction, with shipments plunging 34 percent YoY to 6.4 million units from 9.7 million units previously, causing a descent to the second spot with an 18 percent market share.

Xiaomi is estimated to have recorded shipments of 4.7 million units during the third quarter, representing a 28 percent downturn from 6.5 million units during the same time frame last year.

Oppo has similarly reported a 24 percent decrease in shipments, bringing its total to 4.9 million units compared to 6.5 million units in the prior year.

Apple’s Position Solidified Amidst Challenges

Apple has remained a prominent contender within the top five smartphone manufacturers, achieving a total shipment of 3.9 million units.

This achievement has been largely driven by channel inventory preparations for anticipated price hikes and robust demand for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 models, particularly in the absence of a newly unveiled base iPhone 18 model.

The latter stages of the quarter featured the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which invigorated Apple’s momentum.

The company has capitalized on bank cashback promotions, exchange incentives, and accessible no-cost EMI schemes, as per PTI reports.

Sanyam Chaurasia, Omdia’s Principal Analyst, observed that September typically represents a crucial month for inventory accumulation in anticipation of major online sales events.

However, this year, the shipment growth within that month was stifled by a lack of exclusive product launches, limited access to budget-friendly devices, and diminished promotional price incentives, which have curtailed the online channel’s strategic advantages during the festive season.

Chaurasia noted, This situation disproportionately impacted Chinese OEMs, resulting in their combined market share contracting to around 68 percent in the third quarter of 2026, down from 75 percent in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

Apple's Anticipated Product Releases: M5 iPad Pro, AirTag 2, and Beyond

In stark contrast, Samsung and Apple have fortified their roles in the market through premium offerings, unwavering consumer interest, strong channel partnerships, and structured upgrade programs.
