Apple’s recent choice to commence pre-orders for the iPhone Duo in 70 countries, notwithstanding existing supply limitations, has ignited a wave of criticism.

The likelihood of delayed shipments may drive prospective customers toward the allure of the iPhone 18 Pro models instead.

As the pre-order phase for the Apple iPhone Duo drew near, reports emerged indicating considerable supply constraints and restricted production capabilities.

This unveiled a dismal scenario for users contemplating their wait times. However, in an unexpected turn, Apple proceeded to initiate pre-orders on Friday, seemingly dismissing the predicaments of its most fervent advocates.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, in his Power On newsletter, did not mince words, branding this decision a “colossal blunder.”

“To be blunt: Apple erred profoundly in this instance,” he asserted. “The company was acutely aware of impending supply challenges yet forged ahead with the launch, prioritizing an eagerness to debut the device at the outset of its fiscal first quarter over genuinely catering to consumer demand. This will undoubtedly disappoint many early adopters who were most eager to secure it.”

Gurman went on to reveal that Apple had initially envisioned a phased launch of the iPhone Duo, first targeting consumers in the US and China, followed by an expansion to other markets.

However, the decision was made to allow simultaneous pre-orders across an extensive 70 countries.

Consequently, reported shipping dates in various regions have been pushed back to as late as January 25, leaving customers bracing for a lengthy wait for a device priced at $2,000.

Impact on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Sales

On a more positive note for Apple, the constrained availability of the Duo may inadvertently bolster sales of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Consumers who encounter unavailability of the Duo may pivot towards one of the dual Pro models instead.

Amidst these delayed deliveries, Apple is actively broadening its device roster, with upcoming releases of the M6 iMac, 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro, and an OLED iPad mini reportedly in the pipeline.

Apple executives are set to host an exclusive dinner with influencers on the evening of October 27, followed by a comprehensive event the subsequent Wednesday to unveil these new products.

According to Gurman, a significant “reset” is also in the works for Apple’s retail locations, featuring updated signage and fresh product displays.

He hinted that Apple may have several bustling Fridays ahead as it introduces new devices and offerings in the weeks to come.
