Pittsfield — Federal Funding for Cybersecurity Facility Announced

U.S. Representative Richard E. Neal (D – Massachusetts 1st Congressional District) declared that a substantial allocation of $735,000 in federal funding, secured within the fiscal year 2026 spending bill, will be designated for the establishment of a cybersecurity learning and testing facility at the Berkshire Innovation Center (BIC) in Pittsfield.

This financial support is drawn from congressionally directed funding facilitated by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Neal made the announcement in collaboration with BIC Executive Director Ben Sosne, Mayor Peter Marchetti, and other community officials and business leaders.

Since its inauguration in 2020, the BIC has occupied a 20,000-square-foot facility, which equips regional manufacturers and STEM enterprises with essential research and development apparatus, laboratory space, and training facilities. Additionally, it offers internship and apprenticeship opportunities for local students.

As reported by Neal’s office, the forthcoming facility represents the next phase of BIC’s Manufacturing Academy.

This industry-centric initiative is designed to deliver education, training, and technological assistance aimed at empowering local suppliers to fulfill the requirements of larger manufacturing entities.

It will function as a critical hub for the surveillance, detection, and response to cybersecurity threats within manufacturing environments, which include supply chain manufacturers catering to the defense industrial sector. Furthermore, it will bolster workforce training for various local industries and municipalities.

“Cybersecurity challenges are increasingly sophisticated and pervade every sector of our economy—impacting our local governments, educational institutions, and water systems alike,” Neal articulated.

“The Cybersecurity Learning and Testing Facility will equip BIC to cultivate the next generation of skilled workers by offering substantive hands-on training, thereby ensuring our communities possess the necessary resources to protect vital infrastructure and maintain the integrity of public services.”

Sosne emphasized the center’s proactive approach to addressing the burgeoning challenges faced by manufacturers.

“The complexities of cybersecurity requirements are intensifying, particularly for firms within the defense supply chain,” he remarked.

“Our ambition is to unite manufacturers, technology providers, and partners such as General Dynamics and Synagex, facilitating companies in navigating these requirements and implementing practical advancements.”

This project is among 15 such congressionally directed spending requests that Neal has submitted for fiscal year 2026, specifically for the 1st Congressional District, with funding allocated solely to state and local governments and eligible nonprofit organizations.
