A subsidiary of the renowned Chinese steel conglomerate Jingye Group has formalized a significant agreement to establish a RMB 5 billion (approximately US$700 million) manufacturing facility in Fengshun County, Guangdong Province.

This state-of-the-art base, slated to include 400 metal 3D printers, 20 production lines for metal powder, and 100 lines dedicated to metal injection molding (MIM), was ratified on September 23 by the Fengshun County People’s Government and Jingye Future Smart Manufacturing (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd., which will oversee the facility’s development and operations.

The project is poised to concentrate on manufacturing precision components for 3C consumer electronics, commencing with innovative foldable-screen hinges and advanced camera modules intended for smartphone suppliers.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, this facility is projected to generate an annual output value of RMB 10 billion and create over 1,000 employment opportunities.

Current construction efforts are in progress with aspirations to initiate partial production by the end of 2026.

From Powder to Finished Component

This manufacturing base will encompass the entire metal processing continuum under a unified roof. The powder production lines will furnish feedstock for both additive manufacturing and MIM processes, as Jingye endeavors to establish a premier hub for high-performance metal powder research and development within South China.

This simultaneous utilization of MIM for mass production of smaller components, alongside laser-based printing for intricate geometries, will enhance operational efficiency.

Jingye’s ambitions extend beyond smartphones; plans are underway to delve into the production of precision structural components for robotics, liquid-cooling systems, and medical devices, all within a digitized “super factory” environment. Two-Phase Investment Strategy

The initial phase of this initiative represents an investment of RMB 2 billion, with the subsequent phase anticipated to contribute approximately RMB 3 billion.

Local authorities have designated this project as the largest singular industrial investment Fengshun has secured in recent years, prompting County Mayor Ling Wangyuan to urge rapid progression from signing to construction, production commencement, and scaling within the current year.

The agreement was formalized by Deputy County Mayor Zeng Xiaoli and Han Xiaofeng, the head of Jingye Future Smart Manufacturing. Han highlighted the significance of Fengshun as a pivotal base for Jingye’s South China operations.

China’s Competitive Landscape for 3D Printed Smartphone Components

Jingye is entering a fiercely competitive arena. With its in-house powder production capabilities, a fleet of 400 metal printers, and MIM lines, the company aims to secure contracts for smartphone hinges and camera modules amid the ongoing rivalry among Chinese brands and suppliers.

Foldable smartphones have emerged as the primary battleground. For instance, OPPO’s Find N5 integrated a titanium hinge produced by Bright Laser Technologies (BLT), successfully reducing thickness from 0.3mm to 0.15mm while enhancing rigidity by 36%.

In a similar vein, Apple is reportedly advancing towards 3D printed hinge modules for its forthcoming foldable iPhone. Unfolded, Find N5 boasts the largest display of any book-style foldable. Photo via Oppo.

Competitive dynamics are similarly evident at the machinery level. According to CONTEXT’s latest market analysis, the expansion of China’s metal powder bed fusion (PBF) technology is predominantly propelled by the consumer electronics sector, which favors cost-effective solutions, resulting in a domestic industrial printer market largely dominated by local vendors.

With its formidable scale and metallurgical expertise, Jingye seeks to carve out its niche; whether this will be sufficient to eclipse well-established players like BLT remains an open question.
