Amazon Implements Workforce Reductions Amid Festival Sales
Amazon has revealed yet another tranche of job eliminations, affecting personnel across India, the United States, and the United Kingdom, coinciding with the onset of its Great Indian Festival 2026.
Reports indicate that fewer than 1,000 white-collar roles are affected globally, with approximately 1,000 positions within Amazon’s retail division in India being particularly impacted.
The current wave of layoffs primarily targets Amazon’s Stores sector, which manages the company’s core e-commerce activities.
Employees were notified of these reductions through internal channels, notably Slack, with reports of affected departments surfacing just as the festive shopping season begins.
Amazon Clarifies the Rationale Behind Job Cuts
An internal email, which has since circulated on social media platforms, informed employees that the decision was a result of a comprehensive assessment of the company’s organizational framework and strategic priorities.
“Following an exhaustive evaluation of our structure and objectives, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate a number of roles within your organizational unit,” the communication explained.
The corporation has also delineated the compensation framework for the affected employees. According to the message, they will receive a non-working period with full pay and benefits, contingent upon their current employment status.
A severance package and transitional benefits, which may vary by jurisdiction and employment classification.
Reports indicate that the layoffs have impacted teams engaged in customer service, partner seller operations, and marketplace support, as well as engineering roles tied to Amazon’s retail functions.
Subsequent Reductions Follow Major Corporate Cuts
This latest round of workforce reductions follows a more extensive restructuring effort at Amazon, where approximately 30,000 positions in corporate offices were eliminated from late 2025 through January 2026, as part of a strategy to streamline operations and curtail expenditures.
One of the most substantial job cuts in Amazon’s history transpired under CEO Andy Jassy, who succeeded Jeff Bezos in 2021. Between 2022 and 2023, around 27,000 positions were eliminated from the corporate workforce.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also a pivotal component of Amazon’s ongoing transformation and structural reconfiguration.
The company is pivoting its focus toward AI and cloud services, investing heavily in the requisite infrastructure to support these objectives.
Amazon is contemplating an investment of approximately $220 billion in data centers, semiconductor technologies, and related infrastructure to bolster its AI initiatives.
Moreover, it reportedly expended over $100 billion last year on new data center constructions designed to establish a robust foundation for both internal use and external service clients.
Jassy has previously urged employees to adapt to the company’s heightened focus on AI. “Those who embrace this transformation, become knowledgeable in AI, contribute to enhancing our AI capabilities internally, and deliver for our clientele, will find themselves in an advantageous position to make significant impacts and assist in reinventing the company,” he stated.
Jassy further remarked, “We anticipate that this will result in a reduction of our overall corporate workforce as we experience efficiency gains through extensive AI utilization across the enterprise.”
Job Reductions Occur Amid Continued Investment in India
The layoffs transpire as Amazon continues to expand its presence in India, suggesting that recent alterations pertain more to resource reallocation than any intention to withdraw from the market.
In March, Amazon inaugurated a new facility in Bengaluru, spanning 1.1 million square feet, touted as its second-largest office in Asia.
This hub is expected to accommodate over 7,000 personnel engaged in various domains, including e-commerce, financial services, technology, and seller operations.
Amazon’s Great Indian Festival 2026 commenced at midnight on October 8, offering discounts of up to 65% on an array of household appliances, including televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines.
Customers utilizing their SBI debit or credit cards can avail themselves of an instant 10% discount, even for EMI payments.
Additionally, Amazon Pay users with an ICICI Bank Credit Card can benefit from unlimited 5% cashback.

Prime members are also entitled to an extra Rs 250 cashback on select devices. Furthermore, Amazon is offering 10% cashback on purchases made through Amazon Pay Later EMI options.
