Apple Prepares for iPhone Duo Launch with App Store Update
With the impending release of the iPhone Duo a mere two and a half weeks away, Apple has proactively opened the App Store to welcome applications specifically designed for its foldable device.
In a communiqué directed at developers, Apple announced that they may now submit optimized applications and games via App Store Connect.
The iPhone Duo will officially enter the market on October 23, with prices commencing at $1,999 in the United States. Preorders are set to commence on October 12.
What actions must developers undertake? In the most uncomplicated scenario, they need to recompile their applications.
Utilizing Xcode 27.1 to rebuild an existing application facilitates enhanced development support for the iPhone Duo.
The Device Hub within Xcode provides insights into how the application performs across various device configurations and orientations—an essential factor considering the foldable’s frequent transitions between open and closed states during regular usage.
Unaltered Applications to Exhibit Display Limitations
While pre-existing applications will function on the iPhone Duo without necessitating an update, they will not utilize the device’s full display capabilities.
According to MacRumors, only applications developed with the SDK for iOS 27.1 or newer will take advantage of the expansive inner display.
Other applications will render with unsightly black borders, a significant inconvenience for a device purchased primarily for its ample folding screen.
To incentivize developers to enhance their applications, Apple has implemented a deadline: effective April 2027, all submitted applications and games must include screenshots specifically tailored for the iPhone Duo.
Apple has already revised its requirements for screenshots and app previews, while a new preview tool within App Store Connect demonstrates how an app’s product page will be displayed on the Duo.
Global workshops are also planned to assist developers in optimizing their applications for this new format.
Establishing a Distinct Category for the iPhone Duo in the App Store

The introduction of the screenshot requirement conveys a definitive message. While it does not compel developers to modify their applications, it signals Apple’s intention to classify the Duo as a distinct category within the App Store, rather than relegating it to a niche product treated as an afterthought.
Nevertheless, for consumers, this implies that not every application will fully leverage the extensive display at the time of the October 23 launch.
The speed at which major applications adapt remains contingent upon the developers, and Apple has now provided the necessary framework for them to initiate this process.
