Apple Introduces iPhone Handoff Feature with iOS 27
In a bid to enhance user experience, Apple has unveiled the iPhone Handoff capability within iOS 27. This feature permits customers to utilize a single phone number across two distinct iPhones, thereby facilitating seamless transitions between devices without the need for repeated eSIM transfers.
According to Apple’s support documentation, functionalities pertaining to calls, voicemail, messages, and Find My integration automatically transfer to whichever iPhone is currently active.
This marks a departure from Apple’s earlier Handoff mechanisms designed for transitioning app tasks across devices.
Both iPhones must operate on iOS 27 or a subsequent version, maintain a Wi-Fi connection, and utilize the same Apple Account.
Furthermore, the activation of Messages in iCloud is a prerequisite, in conjunction with the same Apple Account for FaceTime and iMessage.
It’s imperative to possess a supported carrier eSIM, and at launch, T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany have been identified as the initial carriers supporting this feature.
It’s noteworthy that carrier fees may be applicable. Reports from MacRumors indicate that T-Mobile charges a monthly fee of $5 for the utilization of iPhone Handoff within the United States.
As pricing and availability can fluctuate among carriers, customers are advised to verify the specifics of their individual plans before committing. It is important to note that this feature does not function universally across all mobile networks.
Upon configuration, one iPhone is designated as the primary device while the other serves as the secondary. According to Apple, the primary phone is typically the one utilized most frequently.
Some carrier services, including caller ID, account management, and call forwarding, may remain associated with the main iPhone.
Users can switch the active device by simply unlocking the iPhone they wish to employ, with a notification appearing at the top of the screen indicating, “Switched to this iPhone.”
At any given moment, only one of the paired iPhones can have the number activated. Apple strongly suggests enabling a passcode on both devices to safeguard privacy.
Moreover, iCloud data continues to sync across devices, although third-party applications may exhibit varying synchronization behaviors.
It is possible that some applications may log out on one device or necessitate approval from the active device, particularly when additional security verifications are involved.
Apple Watch functionalities operate independently. The smartwatch remains aligned with the iPhone designated as the primary device.
Should the watch be distanced from this phone, Apple asserts that Wi-Fi or cellular connections may retain limited service availability.
However, calls, messages, notifications, and specific health functionalities might not perform optimally without direct pairing to the chosen iPhone.
The activation of iPhone Handoff can occur during the initial setup of a new iPhone or subsequently through the Settings menu.
Apple states that the setup process utilizes the Cellular menu, featuring an option to employ the number on both devices.
For customers replacing one of the paired iPhones, it is necessary to transfer the eSIM to the new device.

Should the carrier be unable to facilitate the transfer from the original iPhone, the Handoff enrollment procedure may need to be redone.
