Apple Unveils Revolutionary Folding iPhone Duo
CUPERTINO, California, September 10 — Apple has dramatically transformed the landscape of its flagship smartphone with the introduction of the iPhone Duo, a groundbreaking folding device priced at US$1,999 (approximately RM8,100).
This bold endeavor seeks to capitalize on innovative design and unwavering commitments to data privacy, setting the stage for Apple to outpace competitors entrenched in the foldable phone market.
The Duo has the potential to disrupt a sector historically monopolized by tech giants like Samsung and Chinese manufacturers including Huawei, whose foldable offerings have remained largely confined to a niche audience.
Industry analysts assert that Apple’s transition into this market could serve as the impetus needed to elevate foldable devices into the mainstream, reminiscent of the waves created by the company with the advent of smartwatches and wireless earbuds.
Resembling the dimensions of a passport, the Duo features an ergonomic design with rounded edges. When opened, it reveals a spacious 7.6-inch (19 cm) horizontal display, which can also be oriented vertically. A smaller single screen is present on the exterior when the device is folded.
According to Apple, the Duo stands as its slimmest smartphone to date; however, it is still noticeably thicker than the offerings of its Chinese counterparts.
The event was spearheaded by newly appointed CEO John Ternus, showcasing the most significant overhaul of Apple’s flagship product since the iPhone X’s debut in 2017.
Last fiscal year, the iPhone generated an astounding US$209.6 billion, accounting for just over half of Apple’s overall revenue.
Ternus expressed criticism of existing foldable models, characterizing them as cumbersome and ill-equipped for everyday tasks such as scrolling and video streaming.
He stated that the Duo was meticulously engineered to deliver an iPad-like experience within a portable device, utilizing a bespoke hinge, dual displays featuring a consistent aspect ratio, and a newly crafted titanium chassis.
“It’s entirely novel while maintaining a sense of familiarity. Its dimensions are akin to those of a passport, offering a comfortable and intuitive one-handed usage,” Ternus remarked.
Other technology firms did not miss the opportunity to comment on the launch. Duolingo, the language learning platform with its iconic green owl mascot named Duo, humorously remarked on social media, “We infringed upon,” alongside laughing-crying emojis.
In response, Samsung Mobile US chimed in with a message of camaraderie, stating: “They copied us, too.”
Optimistic Forecast for Market Penetration
The onus now lies with Ternus, previously a reserved figure within the hardware wing, to convince Apple’s consumer base of the necessity for a foldable device with a price tag nearing US$2,000—a new zenith for a brand synonymous with accessible luxury.
Forecasters, including those from International Data Corporation (IDC), anticipate Apple will sell every foldable iPhone it manufactures, projecting a 40 percent market share within this lucrative segment by the conclusion of the upcoming year.
Apple has marketed the iPhone Duo as a quintessential tool for business productivity, demonstrating its capacity to facilitate Zoom meetings with multiple participants while offering expansive views of the Slack messaging interface.
The larger display of the Duo will accommodate multiple application windows simultaneously, a feature that Apple has previously implemented in select iPad models.
Set to be available from October 23, the iPhone Duo is equipped with the A20 Pro chip to power its displays, complemented by a newly designed C2 modem chip, part of Apple’s strategic deviation from reliance on Qualcomm’s wireless data solutions.

The device’s battery promises 24 hours of mixed use across its dual screens and can achieve a 50 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes.
“The true contest lies in China, where Huawei currently commands nearly 80 percent of the foldable market,” noted Francisco Jeronimo, vice-president for Data and Analytics, Devices, at IDC EMEA. “Apple has now presented Chinese consumers with a compelling incentive to consider alternatives.”
Following the unveiling, Apple shares experienced a slight decline, closing down by 0.3 percent at US$315.34.
