Amazon is on the lookout for 3,000 seasonal employees across Australia as it braces for the impending Christmas surge, offering an attractive starting wage of approximately $35 per hour.
The ecommerce behemoth has commenced the recruitment process for positions at its fulfillment centers and delivery stations located in major cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Newcastle, the Gold Coast, Gosford, and Geelong.
Among these roles, about 1,900 will be situated in New South Wales, with an additional 600 in Victoria, 300 in Queensland, and nearly 200 in Western Australia.
Michelle Theophilou, Amazon Australia’s Head of People Experience and Technology, noted that employees would start at around $35 an hour, with added penalty rates applicable for certain shifts.

“The baseline pay stands at around $35 an hour, along with additional penalties for those working evening, early morning, or weekend shifts,” she explained to NewsWire.
Shift patterns are expected to vary by location and specific role.
This ambitious recruitment drive is aligned with Amazon’s strategy to handle a substantial influx of orders during the year’s final quarter, encompassing Prime Big Deal Days, Black Friday, and the Christmas shopping period.
Ms. Theophilou remarked that the scale of hiring reflects projected customer demand for the festive season.
The seasonal employees will largely be tasked with picking, packing, and shipping customer orders, requiring no prior experience as comprehensive training will be provided on-site.
Amazon aims to attract a diverse array of candidates, including university students, retirees, and those currently in transition between jobs.
“These positions present a prime opportunity for varied demographics to engage with us, whether they be retirees seeking supplemental income, students, or individuals navigating career transitions,” Ms. Theophilou articulately stated.
While a typical duration for these seasonal roles was not disclosed, she acknowledged that their length would be subject to customer demand.
Furthermore, temporary positions have become a vital recruitment source for permanent roles within the company.
“I can affirm that many individuals have transitioned from temporary to permanent positions during my tenure,” she added.
“In truth, most of our permanent positions have been filled through these seasonal opportunities throughout the years I’ve been with Amazon.”
Amazon’s remuneration structure includes a starting rate of approximately $35 per hour, plus additional penalties.
Ms. Theophilou was unable to specify the proportion of seasonal employees who eventually secure permanent roles.
This current recruitment initiative coincides with Amazon’s ongoing deployment of robotic systems and automation within its warehouse operations.
Despite advancements in technology, Ms. Theophilou expressed confidence that human roles within warehouses would remain essential.
“We have implemented robotics in our warehouses for several years, yet there remains a robust demand for personnel engaged in picking, packing, and stowing items,” she emphasized.
Moreover, she highlighted that workers could acquire skills enabling them to work collaboratively with increasingly automated systems, potentially advancing into technician roles.

Separately, Amazon is also seeking thousands of individuals to facilitate deliveries via its Amazon Flex program, utilizing personal vehicles.
Applications for the 3,000 seasonal positions are currently being accepted.
