Overview of .vn Domains in Vietnam’s E-Commerce Landscape
HÀ NỘI — The .vn domain is pivotal for businesses, home enterprises, and various economic entities, affording them a stable, recognized platform to establish their digital footprint.
Vietnam’s e-commerce sector is transitioning into a new era. This evolution emphasizes crucial aspects: transaction security, consumer trust, robust digital branding, and the mitigation of the digital divide, all of which are vital for sustainable growth.
Within this milieu, the .vn domain emerges as a trustworthy foundation for both enterprises and individuals seeking to solidify their online identities.
According to the Vietnam e-Business Index (EBI) Report from the Vietnam E-commerce Association, the previous year saw Vietnam’s e-commerce market soar to an estimated value of USD 38.5 billion, a dramatic increase from approximately USD 4 billion in 2015.
Experts predict that the sector is poised for a period of steadier and more sustainable development in the current year, emphasizing consumer protection, export facilitation, environmental sustainability, and a diminishing digital divide.
This represents a strategic pivot from acceleration toward a more measured, enduring growth trajectory.
Nevertheless, considerable disparities in e-commerce development across various regions persist. The EBI illustrates this divide clearly; HCM City leads with a remarkable score of 91.1 points, closely followed by Hà Nội at 87.5 points.
In stark contrast, Đà Nẵng, in third place, registered a mere 22.3 points, while the average score across Vietnam’s 34 provinces and cities languished at 15.8 points.
This imbalance is further reflected in the realm of digital presence. As of last year, the nation boasted approximately 685,000 maintained .vn domain names, with Hà Nội and HCM City collectively accounting for 63.3 percent of the total, despite representing only about 22 percent of the population.
Specifically, Hà Nội had around 204,700 domain names, translating to roughly one domain for every 43 residents. Conversely, in HCM City, the figure stood at about one domain for every 60 residents.
In stark contrast, the northern mountainous provinces, such as Điện Biên, Sơn La, and Lai Châu, exhibited much lower penetration rates, with figures exceeding 2,000 individuals per domain in Điện Biên.
Thái Hữu Lý, head of the Service Development Division at the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, elucidates that these statistics highlight the disparate capacities of various regions in establishing an official digital footprint.
He posits that the digital divide extends beyond mere internet accessibility; it encompasses variations in digital skills and, more crucially, the ability to leverage technology into tangible value.
Domains as Crucial Digital Business Profiles
As e-commerce transactions via platforms and social media proliferate, the necessity for businesses to maintain their own websites remains paramount.
The EBI report indicates that 46 percent of surveyed businesses possess their own websites for promotional and operational purposes. Among the preferred domain extensions, .vn dominated at 50 percent, followed closely by .com at 43 percent.
Remarkably, 83 percent of businesses indicated that their primary intention in developing a website was to bolster credibility, promote their operations, and strengthen brand identity, while 70 percent leveraged websites for advertising and product/service introduction.
Within a multichannel e-commerce framework, marketplaces enable efficient sales, social media channels facilitate customer reach, and individual websites act as the cornerstone of a digital brand.
Unlike third-party platforms, companies’ proprietary websites and domains provide a controlled online environment, fostering content development, brand equity, and enduring customer relationships.
According to VNNIC, businesses’ websites offer an official venue for disseminating legal information, product specifications, contact details, and policies regarding sales, warranties, and returns.
They also allow for the use of branded email addresses, contrasting with the dependency on free email accounts or external messaging services.
Furthermore, a .vn website serves as a focal point in a multichannel ecosystem. Platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Zalo, online storefronts, and QR codes featured on product packaging can all redirect consumers to the same website, creating a consistent online home for businesses and a reliable resource for consumers seeking information.
A .vn website can also operate as a comprehensive digital business profile, consolidating information regarding product origins, manufacturing processes, certifications, QR codes, and sales channels.
This model not only benefits larger corporations but also supports small enterprises, household businesses, cooperatives, and local producers.
For websites, email addresses, and online branding, .vn domains represent a crucial bedrock for Vietnamese businesses and individuals striving to establish a more official, independent, and sustainable digital presence.
“The true value of .vn lies not just in the number of domain names registered, but, more critically, in their effective utilization to generate value within the digital ecosystem,” Lý emphasized.

“As more businesses carve out their online identities, possessing an official digital address, a digital brand, and a controlled communication channel will underpin the evolution of Vietnam’s e-commerce sector into a safer, more trusted, and sustainable space.” — VNS
