Apple Unveils Next-Gen Mac Studio with Enhanced Capabilities
Apple has launched its latest Mac Studio, introducing up to 512GB of unified memory in a compact desktop design.
This enhancement significantly empowers developers and creative professionals to execute demanding AI tasks seamlessly on local machines.
On Tuesday, Apple revealed the new Mac Studio, which boasts the powerful M5 Max and the groundbreaking M5 Ultra processors.
The M5 Max configuration is equipped with an 18-core CPU, a GPU featuring up to 40 cores, and offers up to 128GB of unified memory.
According to Apple, the GPU’s performance has improved by as much as 50% compared to its predecessor, with particular AI tasks running up to 3.9 times faster, dependent on the application and settings.
The M5 Ultra elevates the system to an entirely new echelon. This configuration can include a CPU with up to 36 cores, an 80-core GPU, and as much as 512GB of unified memory, achieving a memory bandwidth of 1.2TB per second.
This augmented memory facilitates the local operation of sophisticated large language models, significantly minimizing the reliance on cloud computing for compatible workloads.
“Mac Studio is the quintessential desktop for on-device AI and meets the demands of the most rigorous professional workflows,” stated Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies.
Engineered for AI and Professional Applications
Apple is marketing the Mac Studio as a comprehensive solution that transcends traditional creative workstations. Every GPU core integrates Neural Accelerators, while the M5 Ultra introduces them for the first time within an Ultra chip.
In internal evaluations, the M5 Ultra exhibited up to 4.3 times the peak AI computation capability of the M3 Ultra.
Additionally, it showcased processing speeds for LLM prompts that were up to 9.8 times faster and 8.2 times swifter in text-to-image generation compared to an M1 Ultra system; however, individual results may vary based on the model and configuration used.
This high-performance hardware targets developers, AI researchers, cinematographers, designers, and data analytics professionals.
The M5 Ultra is capable of managing up to 33 simultaneous streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 frames per second.
Upgraded Storage and Enhanced Connectivity
The new Mac Studio is equipped with PCIe Gen 6 SSD technology, resulting in storage performance that can be twice as fast as prior generations.
Thunderbolt 5 enhances connectivity with bandwidth capabilities of up to 120Gbps for additional storage and expansion necessities.
Furthermore, wireless connectivity has been bolstered through Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, facilitated by Apple’s N1 chip.
The M5 Ultra configuration supports up to eight external displays, and the inclusion of genlock over USB-C is a beneficial addition for specialized video production workflows.
Apple also enables the clustering of multiple Mac Studio devices via Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA. A cluster of four systems can achieve AI inference speeds up to three times faster than that of a singular unit, as per Apple’s claims.

Investment in High Performance
The pricing for the M5 Max Mac Studio starts at $2,499, whereas the M5 Ultra model begins at $5,499.
Notably, the latter denotes a considerable increase from the initial cost of the previous M3 Ultra. The 512GB unified-memory version is expected to become available by late October.
This price point renders the M5 Max a more accessible choice for professionals requiring robust local AI and graphical capabilities.
In contrast, the M5 Ultra may seem exorbitant for everyday users; however, it could be a prudent investment for teams likely to offset cloud-based AI expenses, larger operational workstations, or specialized infrastructure with local processing power.
A crucial aspect to consider is that Apple’s proclaimed performance enhancements are most applicable to tasks capable of leveraging the expanded memory capacity and superior AI hardware. For less demanding desktop activities, the added expense may not yield commensurate benefits.
Availability
The Mac Studio featuring M5 Max and M5 Ultra is open for preorders, with shipping and in-store availability slated to commence on September 22. The 512GB unified-memory configuration is expected to arrive at the end of October.

For IT departments, decisions will hinge on workload requirements and utilization rates. The M5 Ultra could alleviate dependence on cloud infrastructure for entities routinely employing extensive AI models or advanced media workflows.
Nonetheless, most professionals may find that the M5 Max configuration offers sufficient performance without the additional cost.
