Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software: Advancements and Complications

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system remains classified as a Level 2 driver-assistance tool. This designation means that the individual positioned at the wheel bears full responsibility for the vehicle’s operation at all times, regardless of the software’s function in steering, braking, and speed modulation.
This places Tesla in a contrasting position when compared to Waymo, which operates Level 4 vehicles devoid of human drivers within predefined areas, employing a more sophisticated amalgamation of cameras and sensors.
Elon Musk is wagering that Tesla can advance its technology without the need for similarly intricate hardware. His vision revolves around economical hardware, a vast fleet of vehicles on the road, and the data derived from them.
The premise is that this scale will enable Tesla to refine its software, even as its vehicles remain less automated than specifically designed robotaxis.
Yet for some owners, the differentiation between mere assistance and true autonomy is rapidly losing significance in practical scenarios.
Rohullah Hashimi, who drives for Uber full-time, leverages the supervised system in his 2026 base Model Y.
On a recent journey through the streets of San Francisco, the vehicle adeptly navigated through neighborhoods, maneuvered past a construction site on Geary Boulevard, ascended Twin Peaks, and parked at Christmas Tree Point.
The Model Y relies on a network of nine cameras, with a dashboard display illustrating the system’s perspective as Hashimi retains control.
“This car is designed to change your life,” Hashimi remarked to the San Francisco Chronicle, estimating that he depends on Tesla’s advanced driver assistance approximately “95%” of the time.
His experiences underscore how capable driver-assistance software can fundamentally alter driving behaviors, even before achieving full autonomy.
In California, advanced driver-assistance systems are permitted, yet they do not absolve motorists of their responsibilities. For instance, texting while driving remains illegal, irrespective of whether the software is in command.
“We are confronted with a thought-provoking choice,” stated Scott Moura, faculty director of California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology at UC Berkeley.
“Is this vehicle automation primarily aimed at enhancing safety or merely for convenience? These two objectives are not necessarily aligned.”
Tesla has also modified its approach to monitoring drivers. Joe Jefferson, president of Tesla Owners San Joaquin Valley and Tesla Owners Nor Cal-Reno, has utilized iterations of FSD (Supervised) since 2020.
Previous versions necessitated periodic steering-wheel feedback and issued increasing alerts when drivers neglected to maintain contact with the wheel. Now, Tesla has transitioned to relying on an interior camera to ascertain whether the driver is attentively observing the road.
The software further empowers drivers to dictate the vehicle’s responsiveness. The latest iteration introduces five profiles that range from “Mad Max” to “sloth,” including “Hurry,” standard, and “chill” as intermediate options.
These settings influence the vehicle’s conduct within traffic while ultimately placing liability with the driver.
Hashimi asserts that the technology has yielded measurable improvements in his driving performance.
Uber’s app monitors behaviors such as braking and acceleration, and his score escalated from 70% to 98% when the Model Y managed the driving tasks. On one occasion, the vehicle halted for two pedestrians that Hashimi claimed he had not seen.
“You see?” he exclaimed. “I didn’t notice them. The car did, and it stopped. Now one of them is giving me a thank-you wave.”
Nonetheless, the system can still enact decisions that a vigilant driver may eschew. Moura, who has employed FSD (Supervised) for approximately half of his driving over the past 16 months, remarked that Tesla sometimes lingers longer than he would prefer to change lanes before a freeway exit.

“My eyes are firmly fixed on the road the entire time, and I’m incessantly scanning for unusual occurrences,” Moura stated. “I’m attempting to anticipate my responses, all while observing the vehicle’s actions.”
