Putnam County Schools Completes Major Technology Lease

Putnam County Schools has successfully finalized the final payment on an extensive technology lease initiative, ensuring that every certified faculty and staff member receives a MacBook Air laptop across the district.

According to Technology Director Johnny Sloan, the district has made a payment exceeding $418,000, thereby wrapping up a four-year lease agreement.

This program, which initially commenced in 2008 with a modest 400 units, has notably expanded to encompass a remarkable 1,000 laptops in the latest cycle.

“Executing such a capital expenditure as a singular purchase is invariably challenging within our budget constraints, particularly as we also seek to acquire student devices and various other technology assets,” Sloan remarked. “This arrangement facilitates our financial planning significantly.”

The per-unit cost of approximately $1,400 to $1,500 encompasses not merely the computer but also a protective casing, necessary video adapters, and four years of AppleCare coverage.

This extensive service plan facilitates repairs for issues arising from drops, screen damage, or mechanical failures, all at no extra cost to educators or the district.

“The financial implications of the lease are remarkably minimal,” Sloan asserted. “It represents a relatively inexpensive enhancement beyond the actual cost of the device.”

Historically, the district has employed a one-dollar buyout strategy at the conclusion of its lease terms to permanently acquire the devices.

These refurbished units are subsequently repurposed for student laboratories, carts, or other personnel, thereby prolonging their utility.

“In prior instances where we opted for the dollar buyout, we’ve successfully extended their usability for several additional years post-lease,” Sloan added.

“The longevity is supported by Apple’s operating system updates, ensuring their functionality well beyond the lease term. They are robust, well-constructed devices.”

The current leasing agreement introduces a new fiscal option, allowing the district to return the laptops for a predetermined credit. The contract stipulates a guaranteed buyback rate contingent on the condition of the hardware.

“We have not yet reached a decision on whether to execute the one-dollar buyout or to return the devices to Apple for a $275 per unit credit,” Sloan noted. “This framework affords us greater flexibility than ever before.”

In addition to this initiative, the district has accomplished a one-to-one student-to-device ratio utilizing Chromebooks, albeit these devices are typically retained within school premises and do not travel home with students.

The district implements federally mandated content filtering and cybersecurity measures to efficiently manage the fleet and avert potential issues.

“The evolution of this program has been substantial, yielding an efficient approach to maintaining up-to-date devices for our faculty and staff, thereby enhancing their capabilities in delivering quality education to our students,” Sloan stated.

The district has until September 2027 to determine whether to pursue the one-dollar buyout option or return the current fleet of MacBooks in exchange for the guaranteed credit.
