Demis Hassabis Steps Back from Daily Operations at Google DeepMind
On August 5th, significant news emerged regarding Demis Hassabis, who has decided to withdraw from daily operational duties at Google DeepMind.
This shift coincided with the departure of four distinguished AI experts from Google, all of whom are embarking on a new venture called Discover Loop, a startup dedicated to research.
Following this announcement, Alphabet’s stock saw a notable decline, plummeting approximately 4% and resulting in an unsettling $170 billion reduction in market capitalization, signaling substantial investor apprehension.
Demis Hassabis, who co-established DeepMind in London in 2010 and subsequently sold the company to Google for an estimated $650 million in 2014, will not entirely sever ties with Google.
Instead, he has been appointed to two newly established positions: Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.
These roles will allow him to retain oversight of AI’s progressive trajectory. Furthermore, he will dedicate increased efforts to his research focused on harnessing AI in medicine through Isomorphic Labs, a London-based startup he founded in 2021 with support from Alphabet.
Last month, Hassabis issued a cautionary statement regarding the emergence of highly advanced Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), urging humanity to adopt a more proactive stance in preparation. Advocating for a coalition led by the United States to monitor developments, he articulated on Substack:
“What we collectively do now will determine how the next phase of civilization unfolds. By safely stewarding AGI into the world, we can enter a new golden age of scientific discovery and progress, and usher in a bright future of incredible human flourishing.”
In his message to DeepMind on August 5th, he articulated:
We have arrived at a pivotal moment in human history. I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life, and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand.
It’s critical that we collectively get the next steps right to ensure this all goes well for humanity and we usher in an incredible new age of discovery and wonder.
With this backdrop, I’ve decided that now is the right time for me to hand over my day-to-day operational responsibilities at GDM, so that I have the time and space to focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come to the best of my ability.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s Chief Technology Officer, will succeed Hassabis in overseeing operations, having spent 13 years with DeepMind and recently relocating from London to Mountain View.
Kavukcuoglu is expected to steer the development of the Gemini model, focusing on product-oriented advancements, particularly in cloud applications.
The amalgamation of Google Brain and DeepMind in 2023 led to a bifurcated approach in Google’s AI initiatives, with DeepMind’s researchers predominantly based in London.
This restructuring aims to consolidate Google’s AI leadership within Mountain View, resulting in the exodus of several seasoned professionals.
Noteworthy departures include David Silver, renowned for his work on AlphaGo, who is launching a startup named Ineffable Intelligence, and Simon Bouton, DeepMind’s Chief Experience Officer, who intends to join CuspAI in London.
Additionally, DeepMind has experienced the exit of Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, a co-founder of Google Brain with a 27-year tenure, along with Oriol Vinyals, former VP of Research at DeepMind and a pivotal contributor to the Gemini models.
Together with Quoc Le, co-founder of Google Brain and former DeepMind researcher, and Sanjay Ghemawat, a Senior Fellow with a 25-year background at Google, they have founded Discovery Loop.
This public benefit corporation is committed to advancing ML-driven scientific research. Their mission statement emphasizes:
We are building AI solutions that can automatically solve important problems in machine learning, science, and engineering.
By advancing the pace at which we conduct engineering and scientific discovery, we can bring the benefits of science and technology to the world much faster.
Discovery Loop diverges from creating consumer-driven chatbots or backend models for enterprise applications, focusing instead on employing AI to autonomously propose, conduct, analyze, and iterate parallel experiments.
This revolutionary approach offers potential applications in areas such as chip design, material science, drug development, and cybersecurity, while remaining aligned with DeepMind’s foundational principles.
Commencing with strong backing from Google, Discovery Loop enjoys Alphabet as a founding institutional investor, complemented by investments from venture capital firms including Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures.
Google will provide specialized cloud computing infrastructure and TPU/GPU hardware resources for at least the first year, enabling collaborative efforts on machine learning systems and computational infrastructure enhancements.
This partnership also ensures Alphabet retains strategic access to groundbreaking advancements while allowing Discovery Loop to maintain operations as a public benefit corporation.
By supporting both Isomorphic Labs and Discovery Loop, Alphabet continues to have stakes in research initiatives originated by DeepMind.
Nevertheless, questions loom regarding the future of associated projects. Earlier this month, Google unveiled Gemini Robotics 2, a suite of AI models driving innovation toward intelligent robotics. The fate of this research following the restructuring at Google DeepMind remains uncertain.

These transformative changes raise concerns about a potential shift in research priorities, as the essence of DeepMind’s early pioneering spirit, primarily driven by Hassabis and his assembled team, hangs in the balance.
The outlook regarding the persistent vitality of this research ethos remains ambiguous, suggesting that Google might inadvertently be undermining its initial vision.
