Journey of a Former Meta Tech Lead
A former technology lead at Meta, who dedicated over 13 years to the company, has recounted his transformation from DJ to software engineer, reflecting on how changing priorities within the tech conglomerate ultimately led to his dismissal.
Henry Chen, 38, residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, commenced his journey with Facebook as a contractor in 2012 before securing a full-time engineering role.
Recently, he was among those impacted by Meta’s significant layoffs, which unfolded on May 20, as reported by Business Insider.
Despite his dismissal, Chen expresses gratitude for the experience and skills acquired during his tenure, characterizing most of his time at the company as overwhelmingly positive.
Nevertheless, he indicates that the workplace underwent substantial transformation following extensive layoffs in late 2022 and early 2023.
Shifts in Priorities Post-Layoffs
Chen observed that before the initial mass layoffs, teams benefited from abundant resources and greater autonomy to embark on ambitious projects. In contrast, the shift towards a “do more with less” mentality became apparent thereafter.
About a year and a half later, another pivot occurred, with the organization once again prioritizing product development and project execution.
Frequent leadership changes and fluctuating objectives compounded the challenges faced by teams attempting to chart a clear path forward.
Returning from paternity leave proved particularly daunting for Chen. He was absent from August 2025 until late in the year, and upon his return, he found Meta increasingly reliant on AI, accompanied by alterations in team dynamics and leadership structures.
After a four-month hiatus, Chen felt as if he had re-entered an entirely different organization.
On May 20, he was notified of the termination of his employment, a decision that also affected several of his colleagues.
Though he had begun his job search prior to the layoffs, the news did not take him entirely by surprise, given Meta’s prior announcements regarding impending job cuts. Yet, he was still taken aback to find himself among those affected.
In preceding layoff events, he had felt a semblance of security, confident that his contributions were vital to the firm.
However, this time he sensed a palpable shift in the atmosphere, despite lacking explicit indicators that his position was endangered.
In the weeks leading up to the layoffs, Chen had started to explore alternative opportunities, prompted by growing uncertainties about his role, as he pondered a potential new chapter in his career.
After his layoff, he opted not to hastily pursue another position. The severance package he received, reflective of his nearly decade-long tenure, provided him with enough financial flexibility to take a brief respite.
With his children’s summer vacation commencing, Chen decided to spend quality time with his family, allowing himself to relax and deferring his job search for approximately one month.
From DJ to Meta Tech Lead
Chen’s foray into the technology sector was not part of his initial career aspirations.
While attending San Jose State University in the early 2010s, he aimed to become an educator. However, personal circumstances led him to leave university before completing his degree.
During this timeframe, he embarked on a journey as a DJ. After several years in this realm, he began exploring alternative career paths.
His experience with audio and video equipment ultimately led him to a contract role in AV engineering, where he was tasked with managing conference room setups.
That role happened to be with Facebook.
Initially, Chen perceived this position merely as a means of financial sustenance while contemplating his future career trajectory, joining the firm in 2012 without any expectation of a lasting commitment.
However, as Facebook expanded, so did his responsibilities. He transitioned from a technician assessing conference rooms to overseeing increasingly intricate tasks, including the setup of conference rooms and associated technology.
In 2015, he ascended to the role of full-time operations engineer, overseeing collaboration technologies utilized within Facebook’s conference rooms.
Learning Python: A Career Turning Point
The rapid expansion of Facebook around 2017 saw a concomitant increase in the number of conference rooms and supporting technology.
To confront the challenges posed by this growth, Chen proactively began self-educating in Python, despite possessing minimal programming foundations.
One script he developed drastically reduced the time needed to update conference room technology, marking a critical juncture in his career.
In the ensuing years, Chen transitioned into software engineering, actively contributing to the technology that powers Meta’s conference rooms, ultimately rising to the position of tech lead.
Re-entering the Job Market
When Chen revitalized his job search in June, he found himself considering various options.
One potential path was to remain within the collaboration technology sphere, where he had invested much of his professional life.
Additionally, he contemplated broader IT positions at smaller firms, as well as software engineering roles that would facilitate the continued development of the programming expertise he had cultivated over the past decade.
However, the prospect of job interviews was daunting; Chen had not participated in one for nearly a decade. Acknowledging the evolution of the tech industry in this timeframe, he opted to prepare thoroughly before submitting applications.
Despite his extensive experience at Meta, many of the tools and systems he had become proficient in were proprietary to the company.
To bridge this gap, he revisited software engineering interview concepts and bolstered his understanding of industry-standard system design.
Currently, he is diligently designing and constructing a software system from scratch, with guidance from a coach specializing in system design and interview preparation.
After approximately one month of preparation, Chen has begun actively seeking new opportunities. His efforts involve browsing LinkedIn, leveraging his professional network, and submitting job applications.
Despite the challenges posed by his layoff, Chen remains hopeful about securing his next position.
