Users have the option to completely disable Siri on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or simply prevent these devices from listening for the activation phrases, “Siri” and “Hey Siri.”
To entirely deactivate the voice assistant, both the voice activation feature and the physical button designated for triggering it must be turned off.
The configuration can be found under Apple Intelligence & Siri for compatible devices. In other models or software iterations, it may simply be referred to as Siri. Regardless of the label, the controls remain consistent.
Disabling Siri on iPhone
To completely deactivate Siri on an iPhone:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off > Press Side Button for Siri > Off
Your iPhone may prompt you to confirm the disablement of Siri. Upon approval, the device will no longer respond to “Siri” or “Hey Siri,” and holding the side button will cease to invoke the assistant.
If your iPhone includes a Home button, the last option might be labeled Press Home for Siri instead:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off > Press Home for Siri > Off
Simply disabling the voice option will not eliminate Siri altogether. If Press Side Button for Siri or Press Home for Siri remains active, Siri can still be triggered via that button.
Disabling Siri may also curtail Siri-based voice functionalities through connected AirPods and CarPlay. General Bluetooth audio, music playback, and other non-Siri features will still function, yet voice commands for directions, messages, calls, or media may be rendered ineffective.
Disabling Siri on iPad
The process for iPad is nearly indistinguishable, though the terminology for the hardware button differs.
To completely deactivate Siri on an iPad without a Home button:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off > Press Top Button for Siri > Off
For an older iPad featuring a Home button, look for Press Home for Siri:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off > Press Home for Siri > Off
The voice setting will prevent the iPad from responding upon hearing the activation phrase, while disabling the top-button or Home-button option halts Siri from launching after a prolonged press.
If a temporary cessation of voice activation is desired, simply placing the device face down may inhibit voice commands on supported models, although this will not fully disable Siri or stop activation via a button press.
Disabling Siri on Mac
The macOS platform presents a singular switch to disable Siri, negating the need for separate deactivation of voice and keyboard activations.
To completely deactivate Siri on Mac:
Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri > Siri > Off
Should a confirmation message appear, grant approval for the change. Post-deactivation, the Mac will cease to respond to the Siri activation phrases, and the keyboard shortcut as well as the menu bar control will no longer activate the assistant.
To re-enable Siri, users may need to navigate through parts of its setup process anew, including deciding whether the device should listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri.”
Disable Only Voice Activation for “Siri” or “Hey Siri”
Individuals can choose to halt voice activation while maintaining access to Siri through manual controls, such as a button, keyboard shortcut, or the menu bar icon.
This is particularly advantageous if Siri triggers during conversations or inaccurately responds to similar phrases used by others.
To stop voice activation on iPhone:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off
For continuous manual accessibility, ensure Press Side Button for Siri is enabled. For iPhones featuring a Home button, retain Press Home for Siri enabled instead.
To halt voice activation on iPad:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk to Siri or Talk & Type to Siri > Off
Retain Press Top Button for Siri or Press Home for Siri enabled for continued manual access.
To cease voice activation on Mac:
Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri > Listen for > Off
Maintain the main Siri switch in the active state. Siri can then be accessed via its menu bar icon or the keyboard shortcut listed in the same settings interface.
Restrict Siri’s Functionality While Locked
Siri can remain operational without being accessible from the Lock Screen. This retains the assistant’s availability after unlocking while averting voice requests when the device is unattended.
To disable Siri while your iPhone or iPad is locked:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Allow Siri When Locked > Off
This option may only become visible when voice activation is enabled. While some requests already necessitate authentication, deactivation of this setting will prevent Siri from responding when the device is locked.
To prevent Siri while your Mac is locked:
Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri > Allow Siri When Locked > Off
This configuration is particularly useful if you desire to utilize Siri during regular operation but wish to inhibit responses while the Mac is locked or in sleep mode.
Disable Siri Suggestions
Turning off voice activation does not automatically eliminate Siri suggestions within apps, searches, notifications, or on the Home Screen. These suggestions are governed by separate settings.
To disable general Siri suggestions on iPhone or iPad:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Disable Show in App, Show on Home Screen, Suggest App, and Suggestion Notifications
The names of these features may vary slightly according to the software version. Users can also restrict Siri from learning from or suggesting content pertaining to specific applications.
To modify Siri suggestions for a particular app:
Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apps > Select the app > Disable its Siri suggestion options
This selective approach allows users to keep beneficial suggestions from certain applications while eliminating them from others.
To turn off Siri suggestions for specific apps on Mac:
Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri > Siri Suggestions & Privacy > Select the app > Disable Show Siri Suggestions
The Mac settings panel administers suggestions independently for each application, necessitating repetition of changes for every app intended for exclusion.
Siri and Apple Intelligence Are Distinct Features
Disabling Siri does not inherently deactivate every feature associated with Apple Intelligence. Functions such as Writing Tools, notification summaries, Image Playground, and Genmoji can remain functional even when the Siri assistant is rendered inactive.
To deactivate Apple Intelligence separately on iPhone or iPad:
Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apple Intelligence > Off
To deactivate Apple Intelligence separately on Mac:
Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apple Intelligence > Off
This additional change is redundant if the sole intent is to prevent Siri from listening or appearing upon button activation.
Dictation also possesses its own distinct settings. Turning off Siri does not necessarily disable the microphone utilized for dictating text.
On iPhone and iPad, control over Dictation can be found in the Keyboard settings. For Mac, this is located under System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
Individual Device Control for Siri

Activation of Siri is device-specific. Deactivating it on one iPhone does not automatically inhibit the feature on an iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or HomePod logged into the same Apple account.
When multiple Apple devices are nearby, they communicate through Bluetooth to determine which one will respond to a given command.
If Siri is disabled on one device but a response is still heard, inspect the screen or indicator light to confirm if another nearby Apple device is the source of the response.
