In 2022, Apple initiated the rollout of Tap to Pay on iPhone, an innovative system enabling small business proprietors and various merchants to facilitate contactless payments via an iPhone, obviating the need for traditional point-of-sale hardware.
This feature empowers consumers to complete transactions simply by tapping their iPhones, Apple Watches, or contactless cards against the merchant’s device. Payments are securely processed utilizing NFC technology, similarly to Apple Pay.
Recently, select retail employees at Apple have been utilizing iPhone 14 models equipped with Tap to Pay on iPhone, replacing the conventional Bluetooth credit card readers traditionally attached to their devices. However, Apple now appears poised to enhance this approach.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant intends to issue newer iPhone 16 units to further bolster its in-store deployment of Tap to Pay on iPhone.
Gurman elaborated, stating, “The tap-to-pay functionality within the iPhone 14 can occasionally be temperamental, particularly failing to support premium metal cards like the American Express Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve.
The iPhone 16, conversely, demonstrates significantly improved compatibility, alleviating the necessity for retail staff to manage specialized payment terminals.”
Moreover, the forthcoming iOS 27 will enhance the Tap to Pay on iPhone feature with the introduction of “Tap to Share,” augmenting its functionality.
