Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone may debut sooner than earlier reports indicated. A recent supply chain report reveals that the tech giant has initiated procurement of components for the device, signaling that development is on track for a September 2026 launch.
Commencement of Component Shipments
The report, referring to an insider at an Apple supplier, asserts that deliveries of components for the foldable iPhone have recently commenced in limited quantities.
The supplier has received instructions suggesting a launch in September 2026, coinciding with the anticipated release of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
A second source from the supply chain echoed the sentiment, confirming that no delays have been reported and that preparations for a fall 2026 release continue steadily. This information corroborates earlier statements from a Chinese informant who dismissed speculation about a delayed launch.
Durability Issues Still Under Scrutiny
Recent narratives have suggested that Apple might be confronting engineering hurdles as the development process reaches its conclusion.
In May, a tipster known as Instant Digital noted that Apple remains engaged in resolving durability challenges, particularly related to the foldable iPhone’s hinge mechanism.
While it is suggested that display crease problems have largely been addressed, the hinge appears to still be under critical evaluation to satisfy Apple’s rigorous reliability benchmarks.
Nonetheless, having unresolved issues at this juncture would be atypical given the impending launch timeline.
Prior Reports Suggested Potential Delays
Contrary to some reports, the projected release timeline for the device has not been universally accepted. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously posited that the foldable iPhone might not arrive in tandem with the iPhone 18 Pro series. Analyst Tim Long from Barclays projected that shipments might only commence in December 2026.
Even if commercial availability is deferred, it remains plausible for Apple to unveil the foldable iPhone during its September event, reminiscent of the initial introduction of the iPhone X in September 2017 before a later release.
iPhone Ultra: Anticipated Specifications
The forthcoming foldable device is reported to adopt a book-style design, featuring a 7.8-inch inner display alongside a 5.5-inch cover screen.
Sources indicate it may be powered by the A20 chip and C2 modem, utilizing a Touch ID-equipped power button in lieu of Face ID.

Other anticipated attributes include a dual rear camera configuration, with an estimated price point around $2,000. There are also indications that this device could be branded as the “iPhone Ultra.”
In addition, Apple is rumored to be contemplating a staggered launch for the iPhone 18 series, with standard iPhone 18 models potentially slated for a spring 2027 introduction.
