Jen Pawol Returns as Historic Umpire in Major League Baseball
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jen Pawol, who etched her name in history last year as the first female umpire in the major leagues, officiated her first major league game of the season on Friday night.
Pawol stood behind home plate as the Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against the Los Angeles Angels.
Notably, Dodgers’ two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani acknowledged her presence at the bottom of the first inning, a customary gesture he extends to umpires before each at-bat.
At 49, Pawol has participated in spring training for three consecutive years but did not secure a permanent position on the umpiring staff, instead listing herself on MLB’s call-up list.
She made her groundbreaking debut as a major league umpire on August 9, 2025, and officiated five games last season.
Prior to that, she became the first woman to umpire big league spring training contests since Ria Cortesio in 2007.
Since embarking on her minor league journey in 2016, Pawol has ascended to Triple-A levels since 2023.
On Friday, Pawol approached potential historic significance early in the game.
Angels’ starter Reid Detmers delivered three hitless innings before allowing a single to Freddie Freeman in the fourth.
Conversely, Dodgers’ starter Roki Sasaki maintained no-hit status through the initial four innings, yielding a double to Nick Madrigal in the fifth.
