Scope of the Contract and Strategic Network
According to a report by Reuters, the U.S. Postal Service announced on Thursday that it had finalized a multi-year agreement with DHL eCommerce to provide last-mile delivery services throughout the United States.
DHL eCommerce, a subsidiary of Germany’s DHL Group, indicated that this arrangement will significantly contribute to its growth in the U.S. market over the coming years.
Postmaster General David Steiner highlighted that no other operator has the capability to deliver to 170 million U.S. households six days a week, thus granting DHL access to a market he described as preeminent globally.
Steiner elaborated that DHL confronted a choice between substantial capital investment to create its own end-to-end network or forging a partnership with a carrier possessing established last-mile capabilities, such as the USPS.
Through this collaboration, DHL eCommerce will manage pickups and sortation at its 19 U.S. hubs before the USPS undertakes the final-mile deliveries.
Strategic Growth and Financial Implications
DHL eCommerce Americas CEO Scott Ashbaugh asserted this agreement will underpin the company’s expansion across the U.S. and allow it to focus on moderately heavier parcels.
He further stated that the company envisions adding more U.S. hubs and anticipates roughly doubling its business by 2030.
This contract bears considerable importance for the USPS, which has issued warnings about a potential cash shortfall as early as February.
This recent DHL contract follows another package-delivery agreement recently established between Amazon.com and the USPS.
