At the age of 24, Raymond Zeng commands an impressive salary exceeding $300,000 annually as a software engineer at Meta.
Yet, despite his lucrative income and upscale residence in the Bay Area, Zeng’s apartment remains quite minimalist, a deliberate choice he embraces.
Zeng articulated to Business Insider that he lacks a car, a television, and even a couch. Friends frequently describe his lifestyle as “Spartan,” a term he embraces, clarifying that his unadorned living arrangement is a matter of preference rather than financial constraint.
Prioritizing Values
“I could acquire more furnishings if I so desired or transition to a more opulent lifestyle,” he reflected. “A significant aspect of personal finance is discerning where to allocate funds and where to abstain.”
Eschewing lavish expenditures on material possessions, Zeng emphasizes his inclination toward investing, traveling, and engaging in hobbies.
“For now, I prioritize investment, travel, and hobbies over cluttering my living space with items I seldom utilize,” he explained.
Professional Endeavors at Meta
“As a software engineer at Meta, my annual earnings total $306,500 ( ₹2.9 crore), and I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, having relocated eight months ago after residing in Dallas for two years,” stated the 24-year-old.
While his monthly earnings may vary due to a substantial proportion stemming from bonuses and stock options, Zeng indicated he generally earns between $7,000 and $8,000 each month, excluding these bonuses and options.
He successfully saves between $5,000 and $20,000 per month.
Each year, he maximizes contributions to his 401(k), Roth IRA, and Health Savings Account while also investing further funds in brokerage accounts. Currently, his portfolio is allocated approximately 80% to U.S. stocks and 20% to international equities.
“My objective is to retire by age 30,” he remarked, recognizing that retirement planning entails “numerous dynamic elements.”
Living Costs in the Bay Area
Zeng pays $2,600 monthly for a one-bedroom apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area, which he deems relatively reasonable for the locale.
He intentionally selected a neighborhood conveniently located near public transportation, cafes, and grocery stores.
“My living room serves as both a workspace and a recreational area,” he stated, elucidating why he has never felt compelled to acquire a television or additional furnishings.
His bedroom is similarly bare, containing merely a bed, pillow, blanket, and a filing cabinet that doubles as a nightstand. One investment he does not regret is a luxurious bidet.
“One item I did indulge in was a $400 bidet, which I found to be a worthy quality-of-life enhancement,” he remarked.
Moreover, Zeng refrains from car ownership, significantly cutting his monthly transportation expenses. He primarily walks, utilizes public transit, or depends on his company’s shuttle service. On certain occasions, his commuting costs are nearly negligible.
