KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — A Pioneering Collaboration in Diabetes Research

Huawei Malaysia and Universiti Malaya have officially initiated a groundbreaking partnership centered on a diabetes risk study utilizing smartwatch technology. This endeavor has been hailed as a pioneering wearable health research initiative in Malaysia.

The partnership was ceremonially established on May 19 during a signing event that highlighted the newly launched HUAWEI WATCH FIT 5 Pro.

As detailed in the announcement, this memorandum of agreement signifies the inaugural research collaboration between Universiti Malaya and Huawei Malaysia, with both entities committed to examining how wearable technology can foster preventive healthcare and enhance health consciousness among the Malaysian populace.

The signing event was officiated by Professor Ir Dr Kaharudin Dimyati, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Universiti Malaya, alongside Patrick Ru, Country Director of Huawei Consumer Business Group Malaysia.

“At Huawei, our philosophy posits that technology should transcend mere connectivity and convenience to deliver substantial value to individuals’ daily lives,” stated Patrick in the announcement.

“This collaboration with Universiti Malaya is envisaged to further investigate how wearable technology can amplify health awareness, thereby empowering Malaysians to adopt a proactive stance toward their health and wellness.”

Leading this research initiative is Professor Dr Lim Lee Ling, Executive Director of the Department of Clinical Research and Advancement and Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at Universiti Malaya.

The two-year study is anticipated to commence in Malaysia shortly, concentrating on blood glucose-related research facilitated by wearable technology embedded within Huawei smartwatches.

Interested individuals who own the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 5 Pro will be among the first to register for participation in this forthcoming study, with further details forthcoming from Universiti Malaya.

Kaharudin emphasized that this collaboration underscores Universiti Malaya’s steadfast commitment to research and innovation that has significant societal implications.

“Merging academic prowess with advancements in wearable technology, this initiative signifies a pivotal step towards enhanced community engagement and empowerment, aimed at elevating preventive healthcare awareness and motivating Malaysians to take control of their daily well-being,” he remarked.
