In a series of Weibo posts, a well-known informant, operating under the pseudonym “Instant Digital,” revealed that Apple has intentionally made specific engineering trade-offs to incorporate the Camera Control button, despite the device being at least 1.1 mm slimmer than the iPhone Air when fully opened.
The rationale provided by the leaker centers on ergonomic considerations: Apple perceives that adjusting settings and capturing images with competing foldable smartphones can be “cumbersome” due to their expansive dimensions.
This Camera Control button is perceived as an optimal solution, allowing users to secure a steady grip on the device while making necessary adjustments or enabling one-handed operation.
This feature guarantees that users can execute these operations effortlessly, even when the screen is entirely unfolded, all while utilizing just one hand.
While opinions about this button on traditional flat-screen iPhones have been somewhat divisive, Apple firmly believes that, within the distinctive context of a foldable device’s ergonomic dynamics, its utility will be markedly enhanced.
As such, the Apple team resolved to prioritize the inclusion of this feature—even if it meant compromising valuable internal component placement—to ensure the “Camera Control” button is part of their inaugural foldable iPhone iteration.
