Before the advent of smartphones that consolidated music playback, streaming services, and gaming capabilities, portable MP3 players were the quintessential devices for on-the-go audio enjoyment.
The digital music landscape transformed dramatically in the late 1990s, ushering in a wave of MP3 player popularity.
However, it was Apple’s introduction of the iPod, accompanied by iTunes, in 2001 that irrevocably altered the trajectory of portable music consumption.
Dominating the musical landscape of the 2000s, Apple’s iPod line—comprising variants like the Nano, Classic, and Mini—achieved sales figures of approximately 400 million units from 2001 to 2014.
Yet, with the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, the appeal of standalone MP3 players began to wane. By 2022, Apple ceased production of the iPod.
Despite this cessation, recent years have witnessed a renaissance of retro iPods, predominantly spurred by a nostalgic yearning among Generation Z.
For those keen on joining the iPod revival without delving into online marketplaces for relics or second-hand devices, the RePod Ultra emerges as a promising alternative.
This innovative gadget, now funded through Kickstarter, seeks to reimagine your Apple Watch with a mechanical redesign that evokes a sense of iPod nostalgia—and it has already surpassed its funding objectives.
What is the RePod Ultra?
As delineated on its Kickstarter campaign page, the RePod Ultra serves as “a mechanical redesign that reinvigorates the Apple Watch Ultra for everyday use.”
This device is characterized by a steampunk-inspired titanium shell that attaches seamlessly to your existing Apple Watch Ultra, bestowing both aesthetic appeal and an extra measure of protection.
Visually striking, resembling an apparatus suitable for interstellar travel, it also integrates nostalgic features akin to those of classic iPods.
Among these familiar elements is a metal rotary dial designed for volume adjustment, scrolling, gaming, and navigation—echoing the functionalities of the original iPod. Described as a “steering wheel for your sound” by WGP, the dial promises to invoke a sense of nostalgia.
The RePod Ultra maintains the full functionality of your Apple Watch Ultra, preserving access to podcasts, calls, payments, music, and other integral features.
The rotary dial enhances tactile feedback compared to touchscreen controls, although the touchscreen remains operational.
Notably, the casing is designed to facilitate magnetic charging, audio output through the device’s speakers, and access to side buttons without necessitating the removal of the gadget.
In essence, the RePod Ultra melds retro iPod characteristics with contemporary Apple Watch capabilities, all encased in a futuristic framework.

This compelling proposition enabled WGP to achieve its Kickstarter target of HK$10,000 by March 7, with initial shipments projected for April 2026.
Available in three distinct hues—Natural Titanium, Ultra Silver, and Black Titanium—the RePod Ultra can be acquired through a pledge of $89, with the standard retail pricing set at $159.
